Road route - Ellensberg to Yakima & return

Ooopps - misspelled Ellensburg

Planning a Spring road ride (Ellensburg to Yakima) and looked at using the river route (Hwy 821) for the shortest round trip mileage - about my age - for 68 miles. I have also mapped the road out to Wenas then south to Yakima; hillier and a bit longer but a Loop is always preferable to an Out&Back. I have heard that the river road has good shoulders for almost the entire route on both sides.

Can anyone give info on the best and safest bike route for this ride??? Hwy 821 and North&South Wenas Rd.
edit: a mid-week ride, not Fri/Sat/Sun.

(actually, this ride stays just north of Yakima)

Thanks in advance.

Iíve ridden 821 from Yakima to Ellensburg a couple of times and found it to be a nice route. Itís been about ten years since l last rode it but if I recall correctly there was little traffic and a decent shoulder. My least favorite section was between Ellensburg and the beginning of the river canyon. Pavement was bad and little shoulder. Maybe itís been improved? Have a good ride.

821 is a decent ride, mid-week there will be little traffic. Have a look at the Strava Global Heatmap for routes to/from 821 in both Ellensburg and Yakima. Local cyclists will tell you the best roads to ride by riding them.

here's a track of the loop you're suggesting. The Wenas part of the loop is definitely hilly and maybe a third of the way is unpaved. When I did it last the road was in pretty bad shape (streams running down it and a couple long stretches of deep mud) but the descent down to Ellensburg was worth it. A call to the guys at Revolution Cycles in Yakima would clue you in to the current conditions...
