Place your bets: when will the North Cascades Highway open?

Winner gets a day off to ride the highway. (Tell your boss I said so.)

I'll take April 15.

You get your roads open early!!!

We typically wait until June to get the local passes open (242). But, it is very popular for cyclists and pedestrians during the closure time. It looks like it is officially scheduled for cars the third Monday in June

We've had a relatively dry winter down here, so I wouldn't be surprised if roads open early if dependent on the actual road conditions.

Still... it woudn't hurt to head up to the closed passes, especially if you can plan an out and back trip that doesn't depend on the roads actually being open all the way through.

I don't know the answer, but I REALLY need to ride it (as far as possible) before the auto traffic is allowed.

An April Fools Day ride to Rainy Pass would be superb, weather cooperating. Next 2 weeks doesn't look like a return to cold winter conditions, so the clearing of Cascades Highway shouldn't be late this year.

(this weekend, 3/10 & 11, has iced the skiing fever and warmed the cycling juices)

Last year they did not even start clearing until early April.

Given that the amount of snow in the North Cascades this year is above normal, it seems that an early April start to clearing may be in the cards again this year.

That would mean an early May opening.

Has anybody been up that way lately? Last year I rode up the highway until it was blocked by avy debris, I was surprised how little snow there was this time of year.

The DOT usually does a recon around now and decides when to start clearing. I've not seen them post anything yet so maybe it has not happened...

Just saw this on the WSDOT twitter feed:

"Crews will head out to the closed section - b/w Diablo & @WSDOT_East's Mazama - on Monday to check out avalanche chutes & measure snow depths. More details to come on clearing schedule, etc. after that trip."

The DOT just put up the 2018 spring clearing page:

WSDOT - North Cascades Highway 2018 Progress

Looks like when they were out on monday they determined there is still too much snow in the avalanche chute to start work, so they have not selected a target start date yet. I think your April 15th pick is in jeopardy, SF

[Update from WSDOT: March 26 from the west side and April 9th from the east are the target dates to begin the spring clearing effort to reopen the North Cascades Highway. The dates were chosen following an assessment by WSDOT staff March 19th.]

While everyone is waiting for the North Cascades Hwy info, i scouted (by car) a couple of 'later in the Spring' rides - but before any real number of cars may be out. About 1/2 way between Seattle & Portland.

Never been up there.
Is there small city/village around where one can have water + dispose some with reasonable distance each other?

Last summer I did a one way from Kingston to end of Lake Crescent and was a nice ride and enjoyed a nice hot springs at Sol Duc. Didn't ride up there since I don't know if solo biker has to pay the National Forest fee, so I rode car from the Fairholme general store.

I was google street viewing the N Cascade Hwy, and around Hamilton I got this
