How is Tacoma for bike friendly commuting?

We are considering moving out to Tacoma and want to get a house within a few miles of downtown and bike to work and reduce car use for daily life for our family (two young ones) as much as possible.

How are the roads for safe bike commuting, and availability of racks for errands? What cities would you put it on par with? Thanks for any insights.

Iím also interested in recreational road road and mountain but my guess is there is plenty around!
