Volksbike! -Hermiston, OR
FYI- There is a century ride starting from Hermiston, OR this next Saturday (10/13/07). I've never participated in this organized ride, but I understand it travels roads I frequented from my years living in Pendleton. I have fond memories of these roads and I think it will be enjoyable.
Here is all the info I have:
https://activenet3.active.com/hermiston/
The volksbike is a century ride on lightly traveled country roads in
northwest and northcentral Umatilla County. Riders experience arid and
semi-arid farmland through canyons and valleys. The route follows old
stage coach route between Hermiston, Pendleton, and Stanfield Oregon,
veiws of the Blue Mountains, wheat fields and rich agricultural land
abound. Three route to choose from all starting and ending in Hermiston
at the Hermiston Conference Center and ending during the Hohe Wuste
Oktoberfest Celebration (included in entry), 100 mile, 100 kilometer, 27
mile. All routes are supported with food and water, every 25-30 miles
on the longer routes.
Brochures are available. Cost is $25 before 10/01, $30 after 10/01
including long sleeve t-shirt and Oktoberfest entry, proceeds go to
Hermiston Recreation and Police bicycle safety program.

This turned out to be very enjoyable with perfect weather. Generally, the route traveled from Hermiston to Helix via the Cold Springs Highway (HWY 37) and returned on Despain Gulch Road. The first 70mi or so was very scenic (rolling hills and farmland). The last 5-10 miles I could have done without, but, maybe, that was my legs talking.
This was a great end of season ride!
