Big Lake to Granite Falls

I will be attempting to ride from Big Lake south to the Snohomish area and was wondering if anyone from that area could comment on any particular route that they enjoy.

It looks like from Big Lake to Arlington Hiway 9 is most direct, but there may be some side roads?

And then from Arlington to Granite Falls I was thinking of trying either Jordan Road or Burn Road.

The furthest north I've ventured so far has been Granite Falls, so I'm not familiar with these roads.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a decent route. Jordan and Burns are both great, but shoulders are sparse and cars sometimes fly so watch out. Are you planning to go all the way to Snohomish? If so, from Granite Falls you should venture down 92 till you hit the Centennial Trail then take that all the way into town.

Enjoy!

I'm actually riding all the way to Mukilteo. I was planning on swinging by Lake Roessiger and then over through Snohomish to check out the new bike shop. Was planning on following the Ture de Cure route from Granite Falls to Roessiger, then down to Dubuque road for some hill training.

Thanks for the info! Now let's hope it doesn't rain.

Damn, your a glutton for punishment! I was thinking "Gee, what's a nice, easy, direct route to suggest for Daveyboy?". Apparently, nice and easy just doesn't jive with your biking philosophy!

For Snohomish to Everett the obvious route is Lowell River Road (my regular commute), but I'm afraid there's a shortage of nasty, gutwrenching hills on that route so maybe not!

Look at the Seattle Randonneurs' site and nab the route sheet from 2 weeks ago for the spring series 300k that started on Whidbey. The last section of the route took us down 9 from Bellingham, through Darrington, onto the Centennial trail somewhere near a Haggen (sp?) grocery store, and then down through Everett into Mukilteo at the ferry terminal.

Glutton is right! :twitchy: While I enjoy the trail, that would be too easy. Ahh, and don't forget about that nice little hill at the end of the River Rd (52nd st.).

Clifton - Looks like your SIR route took you on Hiway 9 for quite a bit. How was that road to ride on (shoulders, traffic, unsympathetic locals, etc...)?

Oh heck no, how could I possibly forget that 52nd St hill! Every morning I cuss and ***** at it while I'm huffing and hacking my way up, and every afternoon I go WOOHOO as I fly down it.

Jordan is a good way to Granite...yes shoulders are sparce, but thats the way the McClinchey Mile takes ya up to Granite and back...good ride, rolling hills, lots of fun.

Shoulder is wide and clean at most sections. There's a few places where it's a bit narrow, but the traffic is really low from what I could tell. I was on it for a few hours, until nearly 9:30pm. Even in the dark on a Saturday night I didn't get hassled a single time.

I am a big fan of Jordan road. Foe some reason My bike just preforms so well on that stretch of ride.

I think that Highway 9 is pretty good to ride on. Although it has tons of traffic during the commute time, it has wide shoulders along most of it. They are doing some work along it right now from Snohomish up the hill.

Thanks everyone for the information on this route. It was a great day to ride. Despite the nice weather Hiway 9 between Big lake and Arlington was fairly lightly traveled and there was some nice scenery. People on the road were really generous with space and I even got a few smiles from some of the locals working in their expansive yards.

Jordan Road was probably my favorite part of the ride, with the Stilly to my right and the high craggy peaks to my left. Total miles 70, total elevation 2,984', ride time 3' 51".

Over 18mph average. Very respectable solo ride Dave, although it doesn't surprise me. Are you planning STP this year?

Yeah, I signed up for it at the Bike expo, so I'm committed for one more year.

I think I may do it also. I've started riding the CTS rides with Cascade to start upping my milage. I'll be doing Tour de Cure and probably Flying Wheels also.
