Portland group rides.

So me and my friend are going to be in Portland for a few weeks and we brought our road bike with us and were hopin to get some riding in. Does anyone here know of any group rides that leave from near the city and also any must do rides around. I know of mt hood but other than that I don't have much of an idea of what to do. I'm a cat 2, he's a 3 so preferably some faster group rides and longer solo stuff but would be open to anything.

OBRA is your best bet for racing-oriented riding: http://app.obra.org/ . Their email list is pretty darn active. The road racing season is pretty much over, but 'cross is just beginning: http://www.crosscrusade.com/schedule/2009/index.html

The Portland Wheelmen also have fast-paced rides: http://www.pwtc.com/

Memo: it's beginning to be fender season. If you have such an animal, bring your rain bike.

(FWIW: I grew up there- South Pasadena, actually- so I'd understand if you don't know what a "rain bike" is.)

Yea we're already here, and we don't own fenders or rain bikes. Wasn't looking for racing, just some competitive group rides. I wish we could have fit the cross bikes, but alas, no room. The weather said we should be fine until tuesday, and then it clears up again later in the week so we should be ok to get at least a few rides in.
The only thing I could find in obra is the club rides, and that looks like they only have rides on sat. (damn we just missed them).
and the pwtc are all non group rides (whatever that means) from the looks of it.

Well... dang... I think an email to the OBRA list might find you something: http://obra.org/mailing_lists

Tuesday Night Classic

merckx89, I lead the Wheelmen tuesday night ride from Wilshire Park (NE Skidmore St & NE 36th Ave) starting at 6pm.

Non-group just means riders all start at the same time but don't have set regroup points. So we spread out into smaller groups based on speed. That's how the Wheelmen Alphabet Ride is (on Saturdays). But my tuesday nignt one is a regroup ride; so we get back together into a larger group at about 5 spots along the mostly flat 27-mile route. We're plenty fast but as long as I know someone's new to the route, we won't leave anyone behind. Come on out and join us, don't worry about not having fenders.

Jeff, you're invited too; the Tuesday night ride continues year around.

You should look into Portland Velo club too, weekend rides are listed on the website. They have a forum on their website also so you can get information quickly. Enjoy your time here, hope you get in some great rides. http://portlandvelo.net/

I know the ride you speak of- a good friend of mine lives right around the corner at 33rd and Prescott.

I haven't been on my road bike since the state crit. Are these Saturday (morning?...shudder) group rides still going on at this point in the year?

I'm feeling frisky.

Welcome to Portland, I'm Kevin Rhea aka KRhea, President/Director of Portland Velo. We offer rides everyday of the week including a Saturday ride that always has in excess of 100 riders and at times can have as many as 150 or more.
For guys of your abilities I'd suggest 4 different rides from our club:

1. Monday- Vertical Reality, this is a climbing ride of approx 37 to 40miles and always includes some "spirited" riders

2. Wednesday morning westside- This is a fast paced ride that is used by members of team as a mid-week workout

3. Friday morning westside- same place as wednesday and can be very good workout

4. Saturday Signature Ride- this ride starts same place as Wednesday and Friday on the westside and features ride groups including 15mph, 17mph, 19mph, 21mph and a Hammer 'n Nails/Race Team group. We start groups at about 5min intervals, everyone rides the same route and it's a great group to roll with.

If you need any further info on the rides check our website at: portlandvelo.net

Enjoy your time in Portland and if you get a good day make sure you ride Larch Mtn.

KRhea

Yea, I rode larch mtn. on sunday, little cold, but beautiful. Those rides sound great, (I must have missed them on the website, what time and from where do they leave?)

Edit: oops, nevermind, I found them.
Thanks for all the help guys.

Duke of Kent, yes our Saturday Alphabet ride continues year around, as does my Tuesday Night Classic. This week was cold, wet, and windy and we still had four riders!

merckx89, Portland Velo has some great rides for you to choose from. My club, the Portland Wheelmen has mostly eastside rides; our schedule is available at pwtc.com

Give both clubs a try! You won't be disappointed.

timmythology 10-16-09 12:30 AM

@octtavian

Sorry, but in the ride description what does non-group ride mean?

kw 10-16-09 12:14 PM

timmythology, please refer to my first post in this thread. We'd love to include you too.
