Riding on i-84???

So I wanna go from Portland (well, Gresham) to Hood River on a bike. I found some map my ride routs (https://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united...land/313666169) that look ok but they go on the freeway (i-84) off and on a couple times. It seems to be mostly in pretty rural places so I guess there shouldn't be tons of traffic, and there isn't really any other way to get there w/o going like 100 miles outa my way. So is this legal/safe/not completely crazy??

Legal, yes- you can ride on an interstate highway as long as there's no easily accessible parallel route. I-84 is pretty heavily travelled- you'll want to get off of it as much as you can. The Historic Columbia River Highway map shows the in pretty good detail: https://www.columbiariverhighway.com/...e_bike_map.pdf . Safe? I've had good experiences riding between Troutdale and Cascade Locks for the past ten years. You do ride on the freeway shoulder, but the shoulders are wide and mostly smooth. There's plenty of tourist traffic at Multnomah Falls, but they seem to be pretty tolerant.

Be aware that there will be road work between Multnomah Falls and Cascade Locks for the next several months: https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/REGIO...CL/index.shtml

Crazy? Sorry, I am not a qualified mental health professional.

What Jeff says.

It's legal to ride freeways in Oregon EXCEPT in urban areas. ODOT has the page of where bicycles are prohibited on freeways here. For I-84, the important part is to remember it's closed to bicycles from I-5 to Troutdale. After that, you can ride clear to Idaho if you wanted. (And in a related note, you can legally ride US 26 all the way to the Jefferson St exit, before the Vista Ridge Tunnel!)

I've ridden sections of 84 to Hood River several times, and it isn't as bad as it might seem. Yes, there are LOTS of 18 wheelers, but since they're professionals, they generally will pass bicyclists in the left lane. The problem areas are where the shoulder narrows. There are two narrow bridges RIGHT AFTER you are forced onto 84 east of Yeon Park (guess they want to get you used to it!), and a narrow shoulder around Shellrock Mountain just east of Wyeth. Other than that, the shoulder is wide. But it can be filled with debris, so be careful.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but as long as we're on the subject of I-84 in Oregon...

One possible route for my future tour between Seattle and Flagstaff would require riding short stretches of I-84 between Baker and Ontario. Anyone ridden these?

I have only driven on the road. I believe that "old US-30" runs semi-parallel to that entire section and would have less traffic. I don't recall any hairy stretches while driving that road (large breakdown lanes, etc.).

Only problem I've encountered while riding on interstates is that there tends to be lots of tire debris on the shoulder. As the rubber disintegrates it leaves behind little wire pieces from the steel belts and these can cause punctures. And of course there tends to be lots of noise from passing trucks, but they usually leave lots of clearance and I've never had any safety concerns.

I just got back from a road trip (via car) to Oregon (Columbia River Gorge area) and saw lots of share the road signs on I-84 so I guess it must be legal. I was surprised to see the signs (and riders) because riding on an interstate highway is not allowed in Georgia.

Cycle Oregon 16 did:
https://www.cyclingsite.com/history/co_16.htm

If it can accomodate 2,000 cyclists, you should have no problem.

As I pointed out above, it's allowed as long as there's no nearby parallel route. I suspect there's a lot more parallel roads in Georgia than in Oregon and Washington.
