20-30 mile rides on Whidbey?(Oak Harbor area)

I'll be vacationing on Whidbey Island in August and bringing my road bike along. I'm looking for suggestions for rides on the island. Some climbing is preferred, but not required. I'll be staying the the Oak Harbor area, but could drive to another starting point. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Gary Hastings

Lots of options for 20-30 mile rides, with good hillwork. My favorite is to cruise right up the Island from Clinton to Deception Pass, so you could do Oak Harbor to Clinton and back on 525/Hiway 20. Lot's of rolling hills on that route, although it's 50 miles from Clinton to D Pass; only about 10 miles from Oak Harbor to Deception Pass. Hiway 20 has a pretty good shoulder except for about 5 miles just south of Coupeville. So at Coupeville I detour south (via Main St/Engle St) to Fort Casey and the Keystone Ferry, looping back up to 525 via S. Engle and Wanamaker roads.

From Oak Harbor you can also head west out to West Beach Road (via either Ault Rd or Crosby rd.) You'll be riding right along the edge of the island south to Fort Ebey State Park. From there turn left on West Libbey to hiway 20 and then loop north back to Oak Harbor.

Another good loop is to head north on 20 over Deception Pass (incredible view) and continue on up to Anacortes. About 1 mile after Deception pass, turn left onto Rosario Rd (just before Pass Lake). You'll meander on some country roads for 10 miles or so until you reach the West end of Anacortes. Head East on Oakes/12th for downtown Anacortes. August 6-8 you'll run into the Street Festival if you like artsy craftsy things.

North Jones and then E Troxell roads just north of Oak Harbor West off of hiway 20 are good also.

You can check out all the mileage and altitude of these rides on map my ride dot com.

Most any of the sides roads off the main hiway will make good loops, with plenty of hills. The ones I mentioned are just some of the possibilities.

I don't have any ideas to add, but just wanted to mention not to trust Google Map bike feature on the Island. It may take you into the military base, and you will find yourself at a dead end. Happened to me, anyway. Other than the base, it should be fine.

Enjoy the riding, you'll get you're hills for sure.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I've driven on the island, but wasn't looking from a biker's perspective. Gary Hastings
