Oahu

I haven't been able to find any good resources for climbs on the island of Oahu. What are the best ones? Is it possible to climb Mt Kaala?

When I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, I park at Stevenson Middle school (weekend) at Makiki area and climb Roundtop Drive and descent at Tantalus Drive (or vice versa). Take Kolekole road from Schofield barrack to Nanakuli.

Peace,

Mt Kaala is an FAA communications and tracking station, NOT accessible without special ID or work permit. I have only been up there once and that was for work.

If you have DOD or military ID, Kolekole pass is a nice climb but only 2 miles long. I do lots of repeats on a ten mile circuit route I ride on Schofield Barracks Army Base. Note - you can only climb up from the Schofield Barracks side and turn around at the top and back track. The west side of the pass is a secured area that does not allow cyclist or pedestrians on the road.

Roundtop Drive - Tantalus Drive is the favorite route for climbing on Oahu.

Yep, this one gets my vote; I ride it all the time when visiting family and you can loop it, so while it's not a very long ride (relatively speaking), you can continue doing multiple loops in either direction to add on time and mileage (and vertical). For good measure, I also recommend that you take in Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park and just take in a nice, long, look.
