Can Boeing legally close the bridge or is the road/bridge a Renton city bridge maintained by the city?

The high water also affected the Boeing Co.'s ability to move 737s around its Renton production plant. Boeing has two bridges that span the Cedar. The high water forced the company to raise the bridge on the plant's south end. But that stranded three 737s so they couldn't be moved to the flight line.

Not sure where my original post went but anyway, Boeing has private property signs all over the bridge so I guess it must be theirs. They have armed officers now on the bridge at certain times turning cyclists around and the first time I noticed them, it looked like they were getting ready to arrest a guy who was yelling at them. I don't know about anyone else but i just want to ride and there's other, easier ways to go without having to bother with the bridge. But in answering your question, Yeah I'm pretty sure that's Boeing's bridge and it looks like it's no longer open to the public.

I did not see the closed sign and got stopped by security along the Boeing road. It has nothing to do with water under the bridge. It is from cyclist not stopping at the stop sign at the end of the bridge so the whole area is closed to cyclist now.

Exactly what road/bridges are you all talking about, so I can avoid that area on a possible future outing?

This is the bridge over the Cedar River between the Renton Airport and the Boeing factory. They apparently use it to move the planes from the factory to the paint shop and to the airstrip over the river. Many cyclists doing the Lake Washington loop ride would use this bridge while using Perimeter Rd, the Cedar River Trail and N. 6th St. In lieu of the Boeing bridge, one needs to do N. 6th St, the trail to the Logan St./Cedar River bridge, and then the south tip of the airstrip. I'm told the recent fatal collision on the trail has led to a strict 10mph speed limit, too.

I attempted to cross the bridge on the morning of June 4th. A Boeing security guard was in a truck watching cyclists, stopped me and forced me to turn around. According to him, the bridge is Boeing owned vs county. The trail along Logan St. which extends to 6th St. is an easy enough alternative.

^^^ You can find it in this forum. Some months ago, an elderly woman pedestrian was killed after a collision with a cyclist on the Green River trail. The city of Renton now has a 10 MPH speed limit on the portion of the trail within their city limits. They have written speeding tickets, too.

I'm confused though on why the Boeing bridge/area is closed. Sure the woman's death was on the GRT but that was in a different area and not close to Boeing.

Has anyone asked if Cascade or BAW are doing things to correct this?

If the bridge (entrance road too) truely is private property, this would give Boeing the right to control access. However, one would think Boeing would install a controlled fence/gate if the property is owned by them. They do this in most other locations so this makes me question what the guard told me. Next time I will have to think of asking the question.

oh, that was one of the coolest parts of the lake washington loop, taking the airplane bridge over the river there.

its definitely a Boeing bridge, its made like an airplane wing, all aluminum and truss struts underneath. not a county bridge, by far.

A guard is much, much cheaper than a remote-controlled commercial security gate installation.

I've been biking this route for 20 sum years and have to say it is really disappointing to not be able to bike the section they have closed off. But most important is that the new path after you cross the bridge if you're heading north is dangerous. I think I counted 5 driveways that cut across the path and I've already had 3 occurrences where the driver didn't see me and just crossed the path. One guy was driving out crossing the path looking only left because he was going to turn right, so of course he didn't see me. So beware heading north on the bike trail along Logan Ave. The other way was safer and scenic :(

That is not the only place riding around the Lake loop where it is safer to ride it clockwise then CCW. The lake limits cross traffic so if you keep it on your right you dramatically cut down on intersections to cross.

One of the Boeing Security Officers pointed out to me when I asked this exact question is that it's not gated because of the volume of traffic, the cost and the bridge has to be able to be lifted from time to time. The other reason he explained....and this does make sense....is that there is no reason to gate it off because Boeing employs THEM to keep people off Boeing property. I guess so.
