Need a Bike, Can't Hurt to Ask

Got a bike, thank you!

Hi everyone. I live in Klamath Falls, Oregon and I'm currently commuting to work by bike, and so far it's great.

My husband is about to start going to the local community college here for winter classes. The college is very close to home, and he's mentioned that he would like to use a bike to get back and forth. Most of town is within 7 miles of home, actually. I'd love to get him on a bike too.

I figured I would ask here if anyone had a bicycle they didn't want anymore and had no reason to keep. I've put ads out to the local craigslist also. If it helps, my husband is 6ft2in with around a 30 inch inseam.

If you like you can email me directly at redeyedtreefr0g [at] hotmail [dot] com

Either the measurements are off or he has extremely short legs. 6ft2in with 30 inch inseam screams custom size bike.

Maybe, if he wears his pants like Urkel.

His pants inseam. He does have short legs- his height is all in his torso. I just checked and one pair of his jeans are actually 32 inches long, but his cuffs usually hit the ground and I hate that on my own pants. Still, we have roughly the same height legs and he is a full foot taller than me.

We have a friend who is very nice, and was briefly interested in cycling, about a year, but had the money to splurge. He's letting my husband borrow a very expensive very LIGHT road bike. If we find nothing else, he'll use that, but both he and I are paranoid that this more-than-a-thousand-dollar bike might get stolen or somehow broken. We went to pick up some pedals to put on it, it currently has clippies for special bike shoes.

I'm still hoping someone has something free lying around or at least cheaper than the $50 mountain bike that the Walmart Black Friday ad is claiming. The local police department has nothing, they kindly let me know that they have an agreement with Toys For Tots for their unclaimed bikes. Couldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks to all the 133 of you who have at least taken the time to look at this post, so far.

If you are ever in Eugene let me know, I can hook you up with a bike.

Thank you very much for the offer. That's a bit further than we are willing to travel just now. But, if we can make it out that way, I'll let you know. :D

Have you tried you local "freecycle". I was out of work last summer and really wanted a touring bike to play around with. I placed a "WANTED" ad in the forum and scored a vintage Raleigh touring bike that was/is very nice. You'd be surprised at what the general public gives away. I was actually offered two bikes but the first was too small for me. The trouble with asking in a biking forum is that we love our bikes :)

Do I have to use yahoo to do that? I thought I had a new freecycle account, but I can't find any usable button to find listings or anything.

I do know that we like our bikes, it makes me very happy, actually. But I also know we all have people we know with their bikes sitting in a garage somewhere instead of being ridden, too, which is a sad thing, but that's what I'm going for. An unused or even lightly-broken fixable freebie. I'm hoping that being closer to Christmas parents might be getting new bikes as filler presents and need to offload the old bike.

Keeping an eye out.

I might be getting a bike! A coworker found my sticky note after I moved it to a better spot, and she's bringing a bike to work this afternoon for me to look at.

I had some related questions that I thought would be seen better in this post, if you'd like to take a look. About fitting a bike for him and transporting it home if I get it.

EDIT: Didn't get it. I'll bring it back this afternoon, the lady wanted $30 for it, which is not what she had implied originally. Being purple (my husband claims it's pink and he is apparently picky enough to care) and possibly too small anyway, I can't see paying over half the price of a new one for it. So I'm still looking for a bike. FREE is best, even if it needs minor work like new tires or tubes.

Are there any nifty tourist things to see or do in Eugene? maybe I could persuade the household to have a fun outing. I get two weeks of winter break in a couple more weeks and that sounds like a fun way to see more of Oregon too. I was just drooling over the photo thread.

Another coworker came up and offered two bikes her sons left behind at their old house. We drove by and got them both- one is with suspension and one without. We need to fix the shifter cabling (that much extra cable flopping around can NOT be stock) on the blue suspension one and he'll be set to go on rides!

Thanks to everyone who offered to help.
