Cycling in Alaska?

Howdy All,

I've been invited to vacation in Alaska this summer; a fly-in (Anchorage), rent a motorhome, see 1500 miles of Alaska, Denali and the Yukon, and fly-out. I figure a trip of this magnitude should include a bicycle component, and probably more than one day - we could strap the bike to the rear, I've been told. I'm an experienced road cyclist, and a beginning mountain biker.

So I would appreciate your opinion: road or mountain? And your suggestion: where to rent and 'important' places to ride? Is a flatlander crazy for even thinking of doing this?

Thanx for your input and time!

I live in Anchorage, just signed up here. My wife and I are just getting started but I might be able to help with some general information.

If you're going to spend much time around Anchorage, consider the ride just south along the Seward Highway from Indian to Girdwood. Information here:

It's not a long ride but probably one of the most scenic highways you'll ever see. Take a camera and be prepared for windy conditions.

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and Kincaid Park are others to consider.

I'm not sure about bike rentals but I can ask around. There are rental shops that open up downtown but I believe they cater more to people that want cruisers for sightseeing around town.

Thanks Stuart, any first-hand knowledge is better than just surfing the web. Appreciate your willingness to help.
