Training for STP. The Central Oregon 500 https://mbsef.org/events/central_oregon_500/ would make a great final training block for the STP. Especially if you are going for the one day.

CO500 your event looks like a fun one. I'm thinking about that one for next year.

Signed up for first 1 day. 5th consecutive year for the ride though. The gang finally broke down and gave in to my whining. Of course, I'll probably be the slow one of the bunch.
Wifey is also riding her first one with some of her lady friends. She's never down a century before so looking forward to her training her this year.
Any I'm getting my tonsils out and septum fixed tomorrow. I'll be able to breathe this year!

Tempting again... I signed up a few years ago but then bailed on doing it. It costs a lot of money if you're flying in from the east coast. I did it about 5 times back in the '80s when I actually lived in Seattle.

Between hotel and airfare it'll cost me about a grand. I've got a lot of things I could do with that money... College for one. Maybe if my daughter goes to UW I'd have an excuse.

Curious, When you say "fixed gear track bike", are you saying no hand brakes?

As you know from experience stp is a zoo, especially 2 day. Even if your son is experienced track rider, riding amongst 3000 out of 10000 riders at any given time w/o hand brakes, if that's the case, is a move that could be pretty dangerous.

Over 20 STP's since 1988 I've seen a lot of crazy stuff, but I've seen 3 fixed gear associated crashes, that one of them ended in serious injury for 2 folks.
Whatever the case, hopefully you all will have a safe & uneventful ride.

Thanks for the heads up on the fixed gear advice. My sons quite comfortable riding fixed in a crowd. But that being said, he does have another fork with front break that he will install for his long rides with close company. It's really a safety must, and nice to keep the speed down on descents.

Why the free advertisement for a hospital in the title? It's the STP.

Group Health is the title sponsor for many years. Most of the bigger rides have main sponsors to them so technically is it called the Group Health STP

From Las Vegas, & participated the last two years, but can't join this year. I have some fond memories riding in this event.

I received an email, reminding me to signup, & thought i would find a bikeforum STP thread, to wish everyone a great time, & I will be looking forward to the 2015 event.

Me and the roommate bought our tickets this week, can't wait to see how it all plays out. I've only ever been in Portland when the people start trickling in.

I'm in for my 3rd STP. Would like to do it in one day, but some friends decided to do it with me and I don't think they are up to doing it in one.

Sure, that's technically what it is called, but everyone calls it the STP. A title for the thread of "2014 Seattle-to-Portland" would be more informative than free advertising for a hospital.

Google and nearly every other search engine calls it Group Health STP. On Google this search term gives top placement for the Cascade webpage dealing with the ride. if riders search just STP they will get hits about an oil treatment. What might be fair to say is that most cyclists within the ego-centric Puget Sound simply call it STP, some farther away also call it that. Folks that have never ridden it or read about it or are new to cycling might not be able to find it by just a name of STP. The title is specifically accurate and is not in any way an endorsement or advertising of the main sponsor of the ride. Medic Zero if you are so upset by the title of the thread why not just ignore it rather than act like a troll in it? By your reply you seem to believe that less information in the title "would be more informative", not following your logic here. /threadjack please return to the OP topic. Are you in?

Since when is asking an honest question trolling?

You're telling me people wouldn't be smart enough to google STP + bike if their hits came back motor oil?

I'm sick of seeing advertisements EVERYWHERE. You can't piss in a bar without an advertisement over the urinal these days, there's ads on the floor of the grocery store, and now in there's advertising in titles of Bike Forum threads. BF seems otherwise reasonable, I thought an appeal to not voluntarily advertise in the damned titles of threads reasonable, not fracking trolling, especially since this thread is where it happened.

No, I'm not in this year, my limited vacation time is spoken for doing other things. (I work weekends)

Not in, but on the course. So fun to see you guys ride by Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Really makes me want to get on my bike more and give it a try some time.

I'm in the neighborhood behind the frog pond just before the chevron three miles before Kelso/Longview. A bit before the railroad overpass (a narrow spot for a bike; a blind corner and a narrow spot; gives me the freaking willies every time I ride under it and about half the time driving it, worried about colliding with a cyclist. Keeps me from being more enthusiastic about riding into town.)

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel close to the finish line for Saturday night? Not looking for anything fancy, just a shower and a bed for the night. Thanks.
