Is there any corollation between flying the flag, and feeling the need to be really obvious and vocal about southern pride, and being constantly told people from <insert southern state> are morons? Like it's grasping for something to say "No! We're Awesome!" but getting misdirected and making it worse?

Good job to anyone who can figure out what I'm trying to say. Being articulate is apparently off the table for me today.

Some people, absolutely. Most people don't know squat about the flag though other than it being a symbol of the south and so they think they're "cool" by flying it.

In my opinion, I don't think it is much of an attempt to argue with people who make fun of the south, but more of an attempt to say "the south is awesome and if you don't like you can go eff yourself," if that makes sense.

I stopped going to SA a while ago; that place got on my nerves. Alan is crazy.

By this I mean there are a lot of high school kids and people who fly it just because they think it's southern pride, and don't think much deeper into it than that.

No no. Alan is the editor and chief of SA. They sponsored us 2 years ago for Tybee and he came down and did the trip with our team. He is just..crazy.

There are no filters or mods. A lot of the threads just turn in to sheer chaos. They are the largest sailing media outlet in the world.

My pops grew up in Germany, and my mom's parents did as well.
When we learned a little bit about WWII in elementary school, kids spent a week calling me a nazi. They knew my dad and his funny accent because he coached kids soccer. This was unbelievably stupid, because the ancestry of the population around here is heavily German.

Germans are super sensitive to their history. The idea of National Pride and flying the flag makes people really uncomfortable.

Edit: I should say "Most" or "Many" Germans... there are plenty of idiots there too.

If hundreds/thousands of people in the past have order the artichoke I dunno if I would say "it takes an experienced diner."

I will admit that many years ago, when first faced with an entire artichoke at a restaurant, it took a while to figure out how to eat it. (I figured out you probably shouldn't eat the part you can't chew.)

I also was perplexed the first time I ate a tamale.
