I started this year having gum work. He harvested material from my mouth and graphed it and all took well. Now if the "board" approves it I will have 6 teeth implanted.i will need some cadaver bone put in place first.

This info about the dental implants is nice and some of the comments are very encouraging for me to get the implants. I am also in need of the recommendations for dentist Redondo Beach as I am new to the area. Does anyone here know about a good one?

I'm supposed to get an implant, but have been putting it off because of the $$ and that I'm not certain it's a permanent, adequate repair. From what I've read, you really have to baby it, get numerous checkups on it through out the year, Literature at the dentists office say if you take care of it, it SHOULD last a lifetime and this gets my radar up. Is an implant not a permanent lifetime repair? Also spoke to a dental assistant and she said they purposely shave the crown a bit so it doesn't touch the opposite tooth, so does not take as much impact. She said impants are more for show than for use. They keep food out of the cavity, but are not really meant for really chewing on. So my question to all that have them, are they a replacement for real teeth?

It is just another tooth.
I've had mine for 9 years, and the only time I notice the difference is when I'm flossing.
(The floss goes deeper around the base of the implant.)

Retired dentist here and even longer time as a cyclist. Restored a ton of implants in my career, but had a specialist do the surgical part. Team deal.

It's like bikes: you want the Campy or Dura-Ace. For your bike, for your dental implants. Don't go the cheap-o Walmart brand for either. I have had to rescue and redo folks who went to Mexico or some dude who did everything on the cheap. Please, don't do that. Yes, there are generic, Chinese parts. You don't want those. Ask.

Old thread, I know, but I just noticed your post. If the VA did your dental surgery, including the use of cadaver bone, it's possibly my transplantation team had a gloved hand in there. Many years ago I was on the Navy transplantation team that harvested donor cadavers for organs, bone and tissue. The bone was prepped and stored in nitrogen freezers. It'll keep forever that way. And rejection risk is virtually nil.

I plan to donate my own empty shell for that purpose when I'm done with it, assuming there's anything left after riding bikes until I can't anymore.

Boy, this hits close to home. I don't have many of my own teeth left, and now I'm looking at two implants on one side, and another three on the other side to replace a bridge that has aged out, I guess. (It has cracked, and now there's a food pocket under it that is prone to infections.) All told, I'm looking at several really nice bikes. Or a used car ... Oh, or maybe my daughter's college tuition. My MiL had a bad experience with implants, so that has sort of made me gun-shy about them. I may start with one next year and see how it goes.

10 yrs now with no regrets. The biggest annoyance was the ~6mo gap between the extraction/preparation until the actual implant, while waiting for new bone to grow in. Annoying having that gap between the adjacent teeth.

There are two implants in my dental cavity.I've had two teeth fall out due to dental Resorption.The first was pretty smooth.The second was not as well.The antibiotics I was given after they removed the remaining tooth totally disrupted my digestion.Food was not able to stay in my body for very long.I begged my oral surgeon to let me not eat them after the implant was in.He was able to agree with great reservations.He was correct.I developed a severe infection that delayed the implant for about six months.I've never felt this much discomfort.I took two Vicodin tablets and they made me feel less pain for about 30 mins. The pain is gone however it was an experience.

One in the front. Other than the steep out-of-pocket expense, totally worth it. The alternative is a bridge - no thanks. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "no big deal" but that's relative. It's a bit of a hassle for a while because it takes a few months to get full strength, but now I don't even think about it, ever.

Since this thread began, I have lost another tooth.
The first one was lost to resorption.
This one was lost to a hidden cavity that began below the gum line.
Unfortunately, this one requires a "lateral sinus augmentation" prior to getting an implant.
If you don't know what that is, believe me, you don't want to know.
The result is an additional ~6 months to the already lengthy time period from extraction to implant.
I had the sinus lift a month ago, and the next appt is in June with the oral surgeon.

meanwhile 6 years later, broke the corresponding tooth on the other side which will require the same treatment, extraction & implant. patched me up for now. I go back in 6 weeks for the extraction. a perfectly healthy tooth, not a mark on the historic x-rays & never a cavity. I'm too old now to be upset

yeah this stuff adds up. just had 6 crowns I'm still paying off, & now another implant. my previous dentist told me the crowns would take me to my grave. ok but what about all the rest of my teeth?

actually no, but it did eventually need to be crowned. 4 up front, on top & 2 in front, on the bottom. but before that required a year of orthodontics! ka-ching! $$,$$$.$$. is it bad that I'm getting used to this?

well the patch job didn't last more than 4 1/2 days. the loose half had to be removed. Doc patched up what was left until mid-June. if I wreck the remaining half I'll just dial up the Doc & go from there ...
