Is LA still 7 X TdF champ

I noticed that he calls himself that. Does that claim still work?

No. He could accurately claim he won the TdF seven times, but not that he is the champion.

He could claim he is the Easter Bunny too.

I wouldn't believe him, nor would I care.

I don't think he has any claim to TDF victories.

Ugh. This is my bad everyone. I've been reading and watching a lot about doping and I've been wanting to ask the question here; I just totally forgot that I had already. Also, if it's a horse that's been beat to death among you folks I also apologize for taking up space!

I was training pretty hard when these races were won. Bicycling magazine would publish the workouts these guys were doing, you know - "train like Lance." He was a cheater. Probably still is. Cheater's gonna cheat, I'm not naive.

The horse hasn't been beaten to death. It has been beaten into horse paste.

In the spirit of Lance, this looks like it could be a fun movie:

When I went to '74 Montreal Worlds I got a cab ride with a chatty driver. This was around infamous Watergate time & some of the locals ventured their views. Cabbie was a bit cynical, stating that all the politicians were crooks but some just didn't get "cut" (Anglo Montrealer pronunciation for "caught".) Lance, Tyler, Floyd etc all got "cut". But AFAIK many riders got away w/doping w/o getting cut from the record books. Seems kinda unfair despite the obvious dangers of doping. Sorta like pro bodybuilding in the 90's for instance: steroid use was obvious but competitors answered that it hardly was a shortcut & massive amount of grueling training was required to win.

We can assume all we want and trust all the hearsay. If someone didn't get caught then he didn't get caught and we cannot tell with certainty that he was doping, even if "everyone knew he was."

Erase all or erase none. Tell me, again, why Contador & Froome weren't on the podium last year? It takes more than speed to win a tour. Let alone, 7 in a row... But, people like to believe what they are fed. & no, I am not a Lance fan. Never was.

Not sure I see your point. I don't think Armstrong won only because of EPO. Doesn't change the fact that disqualifying him after being caught cheating sounds perfectly reasonable.

Sure, he was declared the champ seven times, and then he wasn't. So Lance was a 7 time champ. Also a 13 time loser, since he tried it 13(?) times.

His results pre-EPO: 4 TdF starts, 3 DNF, 1 stage win, 1 finish at 36th overal GC. Draw your own conclusions.

If he isn't in the record books, he isn't the "champ." Winning when you are cheating isn't winning...so no, I don't agree with Lance calling himself a 7x TdF winner.

The stripped titles are justified.

Have to agree with mprelaw. Without EPO, LA would never have won the Tour. He showed absolutely nothing in his pre-cancer years to suggest he was a potential Grand Tour winner. But, as a rider with a naturally low hematocrit, he stood to benefit hugely form the effects of EPO, especially after UCI place a maximum on the "allowable" HCT. After that was in effect, riders with naturally high HCTs could not take EPO with riding going over, but those who were low could take massive amounts and still pass the test. And funny, a rider who never showed Grand Tour potential but who had a low natural HCT suddenly started winning. And by the time UCI started tightening up the testing and rules, there was so much complicity between that rider and his team and UCI that he was granted 20 minutes of advance notice before out of competition tests. (And delayed those testers as much as an hour at times.)

This same rider could make calls to UCI that so and so was doping and the next day, that rider would get busted with an out of competition test. This happened several times with riders who had a real possibility of upsetting Armstrong and breaking his Tour run.

So, no it was not a level playing field. Yes, the vast majority of the riders did banned drugs, but no, the best rider (in a drug free peloton) did not win those seven Tours. To strip that rider of his titles, probably justified on that alone. To strip such rider who in addition jeopardized other riders', journalists' and women's careers who spoke the truth with threats, influence, lawsuits and behaviors that would land most of us in jail; totally justified in my book.

Ben
