Oops, it appears I looked at the results prematurely. Two more riders (Chavanel and Dempster) rolled in even later than Dowsett.

Chavanel still has 18' 12" to make up, but he is gaining time in 10-minute chunks and just may be the favorite to take the Lanterne Rouge.

With the withdrawal of two of Michael Matthews AUS main rivals for the red, [strike]Alex Doswett[/strike] along with yesterdays last place finisher, [strike]Zakkari Dempster[/strike], the race for red is Michael Matthews to lose at this point. At the end of stage 12, Matthews now has a comfortable lead of 10 minutes 26 seconds over last year's Lanterne Rouge winner Svein Tuft of Canada. Congratulations to Davide Cimolai ITA on his last place finish today breaking away from the autobus with Mark Cavendish cracking the bottom ten. Better luck in the Alps Mark.

Quite a day for the Irish. Major shakeup.

What a stage today was, as once again it's been proven, a 10 minute lead for the Lanterne Rouge doesn't mean squat, all it takes is one good effort and you are out of the red. Michael Matthews gained 21 minutes today and loses his red jersey after a 10 day run at the bottom rising to 3rd to last. Sam Bennett out of Ireland takes over the honors with last year's winner Svein Tuft out of Canada remains 2nd. Bennett also took the stage for dead last today so Irish pride rules the end of the pack today. With Bennett possibly eyeing up a sprinters finish tomorrow, Tuft is looking pretty good for a 2nd straight red.

Stage 13 results

175. Sam Bennett IRL 5h 5m 19s (+21:37 behind winner)
174. Ramon Sinkeldam NED -0:00
173. Ramunas Navardauskas LTU -0:12
172. Sebastian Langeveld NED -0:12
171. Kenneth Vanbilsen BEL -0:12

169. Georg Preidler AUT -0:12
168. Bryan Nauelleau FRA -0:12
167. Christophe Laporte FRA -8:58
166. Tim Wellens GER -9:03

overall stage 13

175. Sam Bennett IRL 54h 17m 27s (+2) (2h 43:06 behind yellow)
174. Svein Tuft CAN -7:54 (0)
173. Michael Matthews AUS -8:37 (-2)
172. Bryan Naulleau FRA -9:02

If I could edit the thread, I would, bad choice of words... A moderator is more then welcome to edit out the word shame.

Peter Kennaugh UK of Team Sky took the honors today for last place on stage 14 today with current red jersey holder Sam Bennett IRL finishing 2nd to last to strengthen his hold for the red. The Gorilla, Andre Greipel GER along with a pair of Norwegians also finished in the bottom ten today as the sprinters had the day off today. Svein Tuft CAN finished 5 minutes ahead of Bennett today jumping from 2nd to 4th in the overall Lanterne Rouge honors and is out of the podium. The Anglophiles now only have top place on the podium with Bryan Naulleau FRA now 2nd and Sebastian Langeveld NED 3rd. But even with a 10 minute lead, just one strong ride from sprinter Bennett and his hopes for the red could end. I'm still rooting for Tuft to win his 2nd Lanterne Rouge.

stage 14 results

172. Peter Kennaugh UK 4h 44m 39sec (+20:56 behind winner)
171. Sam Bennett IRL -0:39
170. Bartosz Huzarski POL -0:39
169. Tim Wellens BEL -0:39
168. Marcel Sieberg GER -0:39

165. Jacopo Guarnieri ITA -1:32
164. Edwald Boasson Hagen NOR -1:32

Stage 14 overall Lanterne Rouge

Stage 15 and we say goodbye to 3rd place in the Lanterne Rouge, [strike]Sebastian Langeveld[/strike] (GI illness) so we will have another shake up in the most exciting jersey race in the TDF each year. NBCSN actually gave coverage to the gang of 26 in the gruppetto including Cavendish whom they kept saying were in danger of being DQed from the tour due to being too far behind, which rarely happens. Thomas Leezer gets the win today.

Stage 15 results (26 riders)

171. Thomas Leezer NED 4h 12:16 (+15:41 behind winner)
170. Sep Vanmarcke GER -0:00
169. Jerome Coppel FRA -0:00
168. Simon Yates UK -0:00
167. Peter Kennaugh UK -0:00
166. Jean-Christophe Peraud FRA -0:00
165. Matthias Brandle AUS -0:00
164. Sebastien Chavenel FRA -0:00
163. Imanol Erviti Ollo ESP -0:00
162. Jeremy Roy FRA -0:00

In the overall for red, it's Sam Bennett's race now, all he has to do is ensure he doesn't finish in the peloton or drop out and he's got it in the bag as he has a big lead for the overall. Imanol Erviti Ollo of Spain makes he debut on the podium. For those wondering, last year's Lanterne Rouge, Cheng Ji won by over 54 minutes.

Stage 15 overall

171. Sam Bennett IRL 63h 13m 43s (+3h 14m 49s behind yellow)
170. Sebastien Chavenel FRA -15:58
169. Imanol Erviti Ollo ESP -22:26
168. Svein Tuft CAN -24:53
167. Bryan Naulleau FRA - 25:10
166. Michael Matthews AUS -29:21
165. Dylan Van Baarel NED -29:54
164. Kenneth Vanbilsen GER -31:34
163. Adam Hansen AUS -34:40
162. Matthias Brandle AUT -35:45

Louis Meintjes rolled in last today all by his lonesome, but he is irrelevant to the Red Jersey competition, sitting over an hour behind the competition. I guess the contenders didn’t see him as a threat and allowed him off the back.

The gruppetto of 47 riders was over 7 minutes back. Six of the previous top 10 were in the gruppetto. Notably absent from the gruppetto were the following:

1[SUP]st[/SUP] place Sam Bennett, who abandoned
4[SUP]th[/SUP] place Bryan Naulleau, who lost 4’ 25” and was leapfrogged by Michael Matthews
8[SUP]th[/SUP] place Dylan Van Baarle, who lost 9’ 49” and fell out of the top 10
9[SUP]th[/SUP] place Laurent Didier, who abandoned

These results opened the door for three new riders to join the top 10:

163. Sebastien Chavenel FRA (+3h 33m 49s behind yellow)
162. Svein Tuft CAN -8:51
161. Michael Matthews AUS -13:19
160. Bryan Naulleau FRA -13:33
159. Kenneth Vanbilsen BEL -15:32
158. Matthias Brandel AUT -19:23
157. Davide Cimolai ITA -21:00
156. Tyler Farrar USA -24:27
155. Stijn Devolder BEL -25:51
154. Mark Renshaw AUS -25:58

That's why the race for red is always the exciting of the tour, anything can happen, and you never know what's in store. Tuft back in the running for his 2nd red in 3 years.

Stage 18 is in the books. [strike]Mark Renshaw[/strike] AUS who had just broken into the top 10 overall dropped out today. Another autobus of 61 finishing 35:31 behind the winner today (no spoilers here, we don't care who won the race), with Damien Gaudin FRA credited with last place today with another Frenchman, Bryan Coquard finishing 2nd from last.

In the overall, the Anglophiles who had a strangle-hold for the red have mostly dropped out of the race, which just shows what a tough feat it is to be the overall Lanterne Rouge leader. An American cracks the bottom ten for the overall for the first time in this years tour, Tyler Farrar USA now in 7th position. Carrying red is Sebastien Chavenel FRA for the 2nd day in a row with the French having 2 on the podium now.

We honor the French today for their efforts at both ends of the race today

Overall Lanterne Rouge after stage 18

161. Sébastien Chavenel FRA 78h 20m 90s (+4'06"38 behind yellow)
160. Svein Tuft CAN -8:49
159. Bryan Naulleau FRA -13:33
158. Kenneth Vanbilsen BEL -15:32
157. Matthias Brandle AUT -19:23
156. Davide Cimolai ITA -21:00
155. Tyler Farrar USA -24:37
154. Stjin Devolder BEL -25:49
153. Pieter Weening NED -30:00

Stage 17: 155. Stijn Devolder BEL -25:51

Stage 18: 154. Stjin Devolder BEL -25:49

Is this a math error, or did Stijn gain 2 seconds from yesterday?

Not quite anything. Froome is just about eliminated, or will be tomorrow. He can't lose 4 hours.

Technically, he can. Jersey holders and the GC top 10 are exempt from time limits, so he could, theoretically, finish tomorrow's stage 5 hours after the winner, and be allowed take the start in Valfrejus the next day.

In practice, I'm pretty sure it's never happened.

I don't see that in the rules (https://www.letour.com/le-tour/2015/d...glement-BD.pdf). The Stewards' Committee can qualify riders with special circumstances to continue despite their finishing after the cut-off time, but I don't see any special mention of blanket exceptions for the GC top ten or jersey holders. If that's so, the points and KOM jersey wearers can coast in daily at their leisure after capturing their last points for the day.

I guess it's an old rule that they don't have any more? I didn't know they'd taken it out, but it definitely used to be the case.

Nice citation. 1959. Now the stewards could allow both Elliott and Robinson to continue, but it would be a sporting judgment call, not determined solely by GC placing. Or even yes to Elliott while no to Robinson, on the basis of Elliott's exemplary esprit.

Hopefully my math will be slightly better today, I am having to reverse convert the times. Sorry about the late update, I didn't get to watch the tour until midnight Eastern and didn't want to spoil the results for myself. Quite a stage at the front of the field. But what I am impressed by is even with all the attacks and such from the beginning, the gruppetto only finished 29:12 behind the winner. That takes some effort folks at the end of the field so they don't get a day off.

One rider did break off from the autobus and that was Jacopo Guarnieri ITA finishing 30:30 behind. Several top sprinters in the bottom ten today including Alexander Kristoff NOR and Andre Greipel GER and of course Cavendish was with them.

For Italy's efforts in finishing first and last today, we honor their efforts

As far as the overall for red not much change, and unless Sebastien Chavenel FRA drops out of the race, he's got it in the bag and I can't him finishing ahead of the caboose tomorrow and no one is going to get dropped in Paris with any meaningful time gaps. French remain 1, 3 in the red.

160. Sébastien Chavanel FRA 83h 12m 14s (+4h 34'40" behind yellow)
159. Svein Tuft CAN -8:51
158. Bryan Naulleau FRA -14:09
157. Kenneth Vanbilsen BEL -15:32
156. Matthias Brandle AUT -19:23
155. David Cimolai ITA -21:00
154. Tyler Farrar USA -24:27
153. Stjin Devolder BEL -29:07
152. Thomas Leezer NED -30:12
151. Michael Matthews AUS -30:26

Chavanel was really a non factor this year. Did he get in any breaks or do anything of consequence?

Worth pointing out that's FDJ's Sebastien, not his better known brother Sylvain of IAM Cycling.

Either way, yeah, quiet Tour for both of them.

Stage 20 and Alp D'Huez today, short stage only 3 1/2 hours of racing today very exciting for those who follow the wimpy yellow jersey competition. Some big names finished in the bottom ten today finishing 23:57 behind the winner today. Austria's MATTHIAS BRÄNDLE gets the honors today for finishing last. Cavendish and Kristoff put in their best efforts today with their lowest stage finish of the tour.

Stage 20 results
(all 3h 41m 18s and 23:57 behind winner)

160. Matthias Brandle AUT
159. Alexander Kirstoff NOR
158. Tyler Farrar USA
157. Arnaud Demare FRA
156. Mark Cavendish UK
155. Svein Tuft CAN
154. Luke Durbridge AUS
153. Thomas Leezer FRA
152. Michal Golas POL
151. Armindo Fonseca FRA

In the overall, Kenneth Vanbilsen of Belgium leapfrogged Bryan Naulleau of France into the podium. They will be fighting for a podium finish tomorrow in Paris. In last years Paris stage, the Lanterne Rouge winner Ji Cheng of China managed to drop almost 5 minutes on stage 21 finishing all by himself. I guess Chavenel will be keeping an eye on Tuft tomorrow to make sure he doesn't sneak in an extra bathroom break and disappear from the peloton.

Stage 20 overall

160. Sébastien Chavenel FRA 86h 53'32" (4h 56'59" behind yellow)
159. Svein Tuft CAN -8:51
158. Kenneth Vanbilsen BEL -15:32
157. Bryan Naulleau FRA -16:47
156. Matthias Brandle AUT -19:33
155. Davide Cimolai ITA -23:38
154. Tyler Farrar USA -24:27
153. Thomas Leezer NED -30:12
152. Michael Matthews AUs -30:26
151. Luke Durbridge AUS -31:56
