Earphones at TdF? (no spoilers)

So, I see numerous riders with earbuds on at the TdF. What are these for? Are these some sort of team communications, or are the guys actually racing while listening to music?

It's for team communication. They can talk to the team coordinators in the support cars.

Interesting. Is there some sort of legal limit on who can have them, or why wouldn't all the team members wear them? Are they two way?

I think it would be cool if these were not allowed. Something easy to implement.

AFAIK all TdFriders have 2-way radios Trad fans complained radios made races too programmed so UCI restricted team radios to top-level events but now radios again allowed in Tour of California, Tour of Britain etc.

They all have communication and yes, they are two way.

In many races they aren't. In the big ones they are.

This has been an ongoing discussion/ argument. One year they tried to ban team radios and the peloton refused to ride. The riders think it's dangerous to not have communication. The fans think it would be more interesting.

Hmm, ok, maybe some of the riders were just using different systems that weren't as visible.

With as much going on with motor vehicles in the race, I can easily see why.

I'm not sure but I think before racers were equipped with the 2-way radios the team cars had radios to communicate with race officials. Current biggest danger to riders is "road furniture" ie traffic islands/roundabouts. Rider radios might help a bit there though the advantage is surely limited since knowing about an obstacle doesn't mean it's practical or easy to avoid them in high-speed peleton.

Waiting patiently for a UCI/Bose or UCI/Beats sponsorship to happen, lol.

Motorola was a sponsor of the big US team. BTW I got some Bose sport earbuds, they don't stay put very well. Most inappropriate TdF sponsorship was probably when Coke took over from Perrier, yuk.

Haha.

I tried the bluetooth jaybird ones, total crap. My favorite are still the etymotic style ones with the rubber cones.

I'm always amused by the cell phone sponsors...hey folks, give it up for distracted driving.

Radio Shack amused me for some reason. Maybe because it was right before they went bankrupt.
