Why dont they show the whole stage on TV?

I watch the tour de france on nbcsports channel and they seem to only show like 2 hours of the event and a lot of it is commercials. I have heard them commentate that they have "been biking for 5 hours now" but they are like only like 1 hour into the broadcast and im wondering where the other 4 hours are. I'm about to watch the next stage right now at 11 but im guessing they wont actually show much of it like usual

Because they want you to pay for it and buy NBC Gold.

The last few days they've had 4 hours of coverage each day. That's over 100 miles of racing. If anything happens before then, which it usually never does, they would show replays. Your not missing anything.

Because they don't get enough viewers to attract sponsors for the full length broadcast

Breakaways usually start in the first hour of the race.
