Or he's riding for Hirschi. Or Costa.

Or targeting the ITT in Banyoles.

I rode in Banyoles in 2019. Seems like a long time ago.

Graduated 2020.
He's in the Royal Singapore Airforce squadron @ Luke AFB near Phoenix. Thus - they do rides and espresso.
Goes to TX this summer for the 2nd wave of pilot training. We should know in a year what he flies.
Strava looks a lot like this:

Great effort today in Bilbao. 2nd place in the ITT, 2 seconds back from Roglic.
I'm sure he's wishing he had been just a smidgen faster.

Yeah. Wow. The two of them were head and shoulders above the rest.

I don't know how the day actually played out for weather, but the forecast was that winds would get unfavorable as the day went on. Roglic started early and McNulty late. I wonder if that was an issue.

Tadej sitting in 5th *should* be helping his teammate in first. I have not watched any of the race, I'll try to find tomorrow. Both the UAE teammates the GT GC guys, so the domestique role might be difficult. Can Tadej just mark Primoz who has a teammate only :28 back? Too many scenarios to think about.
Finish on the 4th major climb. I don't think :23 sec is much a lead for that course.

Yea, I'm thinking it is going to be a rough day tomorrow. I see Tadej and Primoz lighting it up. My kid gives the edge to Tadej. I'm rooting for the oldest guy if Brandon struggles on the climb.

a roughly 70 mile, compressed climbing stage with three cat 1's, a cat 2 and a few cat 3's thrown in for giggles along with plenty of wiggles along the route.
could be one of the best stages of the year. expecting a million breakaway attempts from the get go till the near end. picking roglic for the stage win but thinking
uae barely holds on with brandon winning by the slimmest of margins. absolutely everything, including the kitchen sink, is coming his way saturday...and not
just from team jv. how brandon and the team are able to respond, attack, counter and defend will speak volumes about the upcoming gt's.

could be godzilla vs king kong with lots of collateral, tokyo area, rider damage...esp if both go before that last big climb...which is likely.
tadej can sit on the back wheel of roglic some but would still have to gain 21 seconds on roglic to win the overall if mcnulty can't follow/stay close.
expecting vingegaard to be thrust out there on the second cat 1 climb to force the issue. there will be plenty of calculating by uae, team jv and others throughout the stage.

Not sure what that means in this context. Both will be protected riders. They offer a 1-2 punch for UAE. But there's no way Pogacar gives mcNulty a wheel or drops back to pace him on after a mechanical.

If you saw the race, TP did drop back. This may have kept him from making the break. He worked awfully hard. He was shaking his head at the finish. If he was told to drop back, shaking of the head is not a good career move. If he decided to, well, a miscalculation. Nobody want's to diss the GC guy but I think everyone knows BM is not a good 13% climber. Albeit they got dispatched on the downhill. What ended up happening is TP nether helped BM much, although he tried, and nobody wanted to help him. The net was both UAE riders likely finished further behind. I think the management might have better planned this as a day BM would work for TP (GC riders riding for GC riders is hard to do) and say something like ".. This is a rare race we will ride together. It is training, and since the course better fits my teammate ...".
So I was not surprised by ability, but more by the [mis-]calculations of the UAE team.
What is clear is the TdF will be very different for TP than last year. He is not going to get any help from other riders. Then we have RE who might be back.

Initials are so much easier.

I agree UAE should've been more forceful about who should do what on Saturday. I caught abit of a weird vibe after Wednesday, seeing Tadej and Brandon cooling down they didn't seem too enthused.

They should've committed 100% either to Tadej or Brandon - podium be damned. If Tadej had stayed back I think Brandon could've been paced for a good top ten. Instead Tadej just pulled the whole time for the top 11 riders with no help. Brandon ended up 8 minutes back and 14th.

At this point, it must be absolutely clear that Pogacar is not only a younger, but better GC rider than McNulty. Period. McNulty was fortunate to be in the yellow because JV let it go in the break in two stages earlier. In a grand tour, McNulty wouldn't be allowed that and the discussion of "Pogacar vs McNulty" wouldn't be even a discussion because McNulty would not be in yellow. If anyone is mad, it should be Pogacar being mad at UAE's plan.

"At this point..." If it wasn't for his crash - as least in short tours Remco E would be my top. Will he really fully recover?

This mini trend trend of both TdF white and yellow being won by the same rider I don't think will be a long term thing.
I still think GC riders peak late in their 20s, just that we have a wave of talent now.
These kids changed a lot from U17 till now. I expect there will be more changes.

Was it Remco that ran into / off a bridge? Can't recall exactly. Unknown where he'd be without that so I'll stick with the intra-UAE scence.

That last day in Itzulia was always going to be a stretch for our Brandon. The direction (or at least outcome) from UAE to support McNulty could only serve these ends, intentional or not: (all BEFORE they left him)

1. a boost of emotional support to Brandon. We believe in you, kid.
2. an homage to the cycling gods of old +/- precedent to other team members.
3. a reminder to Pogacar that he's part of a team, and it's not ALWAYS about him

All that could have been noble. Much more noble than looking at it as their long shot to win (all in Brandon) which may or may not have been more of a long shot than saying fly young Tadej, be free, the rest will limp in with Brandon and you try to find 20+ seconds.

The flip from stay back and work to go fly really flushed all of the theoretical higher ends and left them holding a soup sandwich.

Oh well. Shoulder shrug. Belgian whoof. That's racing.

When the gap was still manageably small but not closing, I was surprised McNulty didn't share in the work to try to close it for the both of them. Maybe he did and I missed it. Maybe he couldn't which makes the whole thing even more questionable.

P.S. here's Chris Horner on UAEgate.

Several interesting insights all delivered in his fluid hot mess fashion, with the occasional subtitle / erratum. My thinking going in was that the GC-guarding burden should have been on the rest of the team with Pogacar free to defend his own position +/- attack. Horner seemed to agree and shed a lot of new-to-me light on how that went sideways fast. Also props to our Brandon.
