Chris Froome: Cyclist facing questions over adverse test result - BBC Sport

Chris Froome is facing questions after returning an "adverse" drugs test at the Vuelta a Espana.
The Team Sky rider had double the allowed level of legal asthma drug Salbutamol in his urine.

Much ado about nuthin' I would think.

If not, what benefits would this drug provide other than for the asthma?

Whether they get any benefit from using ashma inhalers in huge quantities is up for debate-

What's the deal with asthma and pro cycling? - Cycling Weekly

Are asthma medicines unofficial PEDs? - Cycling Weekly

Still, it's a controlled substance, and Froome of all people needs to monitor everything that he puts into his body almost to the molecular level to avoid "accidentally" doubling the amount of a controlled substance in his urine.

Limiting drug use is not just about reducing the edge an athlete may have from using performance enhancing drugs but also, arguably more importantly, to protect the riders from abuse which could negatively impact their health.

Salbutamol helps to open up the airways in asthma sufferers. Even if it's not proven that it can actually enhance performance, a rider who perceives that it does may use the drug irresponsibly.

UCI does not want to have their athletes needlessly taking a bunch of drugs, this could have all sorts of negative impact on the sport.

As much as I'm not a fan of Froome or Team Sky I hope he doesn't lose his Vuelta over this. It "sounds" like he was having some asthma issues and doubled his dose with Dr's advice. Not smart, but I don't think he intended to cheat. I guess we will have to see what comes of it.

Intention (to cheat) is irrelevant. If the finding is confirmed, Froome should and will lose his Vuelta and his placing at the last Worlds t/t, and probably have to serve a ban.

It's demonstrated to improve performance if ingested (vs inhaled)

I'm fairly against TUEs, partially for this reason. If the drug poses no performance enhancing benefit, it should be free for anyone to use without scrutiny. If it does pose performance enhancing benefits, and one cannot compete without it, to put it bluntly you are no more a top level athlete than someone who would use any other substance to improve their performance.

According to the BBC, considerably more high-level athletes are asthamatic than the general population.

That's part of this controversy... there is no TUE required for Salbutamol, just a strict concentration limit. It's fair game for anybody up to that limit and Froome tested past that upper limit by 100%.

It's amazing how many professional cyclist suffer from asthma. (ie I think it's a way to legally dope).

Thanks for posting that link. I was inclined to agree with you until I read the linked page.

The doctor who was interviewed for the article at the link explains why the proportion of swimmers and cyclists with asthma is genuinely higher than the proportion in the general population. The doctor also argues that there is no performance-enhancing effect:

"And, the thing is that if you have asthma and you take [a bronchodilator], it will improve repeated efforts. But that’s because it is just bringing you back to normal.

The point of asthma drugs is not to improve your performance as such, it is to bring you back to normal from sub-normal."

Look at all the trouble Armstrong went through to win. All he had to do was suck up a bunch of Salbutamol and shazam! What a dope.

There's a couple things that make testing over the limit for this particular drug that makes it much less innocuous than someone is implying by saying that the using an inhaler does not enhance performance. If you'd thoroughly read the other articles linked in this thread you would have discovered:
  1. Salbutamol has been found to enhance performance when ingested rather than inhaled.
  2. Salbutamol is on the list of substances that can be used to mask the presence of other PED's.

The fact is that the concentration level was exceedingly high, especially for an athlete and support staff who are considered some of the best in the sport at managing such stuff. The investigation may very well reveal some mitigating factors but they definitely have an uphill battle ahead of them.

Considering that this is Team Sky, considering that this is Chris Froome, considering he struggled on Stage Six but hung with the leader on Stage Seven ... "accident" seems pretty slim as a possibility. If there might have been some other substance hiding behind the Salbutamol ....

I really liked Froome .... but if he cheated, he deserves to lose the Vuelta title and deserves a season or so off .....

But since this is UCI, most of the effort will probably go into spinning this in some way which hides the fact that popular cyclists are allowed to dope, still.

But the economic climate is great in Monaco, tax avoidance seeking immigrants are needing more land..
So they will be moving the Marina further out into the Med, infilling the coast.

I know a woman who works in Monaco, but lives in Southern France, just a few miles outside of it.
From what she tells me, it sounds like that is the norm for people working there...unless you are filthy rich.
