I thought Robbie McEwen was pretty good on the TDU coverage. Stepped on Phil's lines a little bit, but they haven't had much time to get the give and take worked out yet. I like Bob Rolle, but based on his commentary on other races, would not like him full time in the booth. Also agree about Jens Voigt. Don't care for his style much. Christian Vande Velde would probably be the safe bet. He has come a long way from when he first started. I swear he would say "for sure" after every line when he first got in the booth. He has much improved.

Phil needs to retire. I know that will not be popular, but after listening— a lot — to Matt and Robbie through all three grand tours in ‘18, it was clear they had a deeper knowledge and vastly better delivery than Phil and Paul. Now, without Paul, Phil’s interruptions/ all over the place delivery were just ridiculous at the TdU. Sorry Phil, you’ve been the voice of cycling forever, but it’s time to pass the batton.

Didn't Robbie do the "non-NBC" feed for the TdF last year? When I pull up the ad-free replay on NBC sports, it's McEwan and someone who's name I can't recall at the moment.

Yes, I think you're correct. I just meant he won't be able to do the TdF with Phil (at least that's what I assume).

I expect him to replace Christian VDV in that other booth. I love hearing his analyses.

For TV, it is not about the analyses as much as making it un-boring. This is a 5+ hour event X 20 something were the most exciting things for 90% who watch in hours 1-4.5 are the nature breaks. Which is why coverage of many stages start at the 30K to go.

Races are too long. They would be faster and more exciting if they were shorter.

Totally agree. However, shorter races mean fewer places to run advertisements and there is also the long European history and tradition that would have to be adjusted. I suspect that would be tough. But even during the height of Lance mania (before the rumors began) I was having a hard time watching every TDF race in it's entirety. Long is one thing, but long with no real action is hard.

For me...(I am biased, cause I like the guy and he was nice to my kid), I find CVDV soothing. Like Phil. Both put me to sleep. I like to watch with a nice glass of wine and soft couch and doze off. Jen's, I can't sleep to.

response II. Euro's are changing. They like 90 min soccer games, rugby, even more basket ball and NFL. It is hard to leave work to camp and watch a bike race. They watch more CX. They enjoy MTB. Certainly the TdF will be around, but just like it went from a dirt road ride to a paved one, it may change again. The mistake, IMO is UCI calls too many things cycling. Hitting balls into a net using a bike, is not cycling. Nor is bike gymnastics. Shoot, I'd dump BMX, fat tire, MYB too. But I'm harsh.
