velogames 2023-and so it begins...
yeah...welcome 2023. it's been a hot minute. hope everyone was productive and prosperous the last few months during the velogames/road cycling season lull. season is upon us yet again!
tour down under comes rolling thru first. deadline to register is 8:15am cet (central european time) on tuesday, january 17th, 2023. some interesting riders afoot.
https://www.velogames.com/tour-down-under/2023/
league: bike forums
league code: 877037911
if recent history is any guide, this 9-digit code will serve as the code for the rest of the year with any "bike forums" league events. once you're
entered into one "bike forums" league event, you will most likely be automatically entered into any event during the year that you participate in.
spring classics/races and the 8-headed, not so fantasy monster they spawn will be upon us soon enuff. sharpen thy swords and dismount
for none. bon chance and best wishes always.

It seems Caleb was! That little rascal did OK in the preview crit down under. May he stay on his bike some more, and let's hope the antipodean teen fan girls let the lads sleep.

Glancing at Shad's Mess, I see a few sage choices but casually netted the team's prospects out to mediocre at best.
I'm pretty sure that means Shadco is going to wipe the floor with my weak attempt to excel.

hope to catch you in the next go-round, semroc. welcome back.
looks like we've got some new blood. welcome everyone!
Grain Brain...almost spit out my beer when viewing your team name. that was...unexpected.
seems as good a time as any for the annual disclaimer...as usual, regarding the extensive, lucrative, hotly contested and much sought podium no-prizes...
not counting any late arrivals into the various endeavors/games that involve multiple stages once the third stage (or day) starts.

^^ Gotta fuel the last V8 interceptor somehow!
Swapped out Matthews for Geraint at the last moment, oh well. I just hope Geraint makes it to the Fossacesia marina in good form. Ciao!
Bummer Honoré fell, haven't watched anything so hope he's ok + Sean Quinn. A lot of riders changing teams, I'm hoping for good things with Groves on Alpecin.

Some impressive pantos dropping by Grain Brain. Let's see how this goes. It's not such a long way to Mount Lofty, but maybe there's still time to reel back a few hundred points.
Hayters gonna hate. Doubly so on Pitcairn island. But I didn't pick him. Or Caleb (rule #87 violation), thinking there's a lot of reduced bunch at best finishes. Though the pocket rocket was climbing better in recent years and may make it intersting.
There seems to be more pick diversity than usual in our little league, and some new names. Best to everyone. Well, second best.
BTW, Bettiol was going to be a meteorologist if the bike thing didn't work out. That sure came in handy with today's early start. I don't quite know how to say this, but Down Under he's kind of a big deal, all ochre and such.

I was just dropping by to say "it's hard to pick against Ewan in a stage like this, why didn't I pick him?" but then I saw how ridiculously early this time zone thing works out to be. I don't think Caleb will pull it off. Predictions are so much easier to make about the past.
For bizarre proposition bets, what are the odds of two Hugos in the top 10?

Another stage victory for GrainBrain ! We haven't seen dominance like this since back when George Santos was riding for Radio Shack.

Great win by Bauhaus! Of course it was severely tempered by Gesink's broken pelvis and DNF. That was such a frustrating thing to watch, he had the rider behind him slip out and chop his rear wheel. Knox's DQ a little harsh I thought. Looks like Matthews will have his day tomorrow though? Ooo maybe Bilbao ... or Groves?

I was poking around on Peacock last night and saw that "today's" race broadcasts live at 9:30pm Eastern last night. Ozzy ozzy ozzy.
That's still past my bedtime, and a little too early for our night owl ooga-booga . On Demand is a marvelous thing. And waking up to see the Velogames standings updated! Shadco certainly hitched up his Depends and dashed to the finish line with no mess in Stage 2, taking the day's podium and elbowing his way handily to the middle of the pack on GC. GrainBrain continues to stand head and shoulders above the churn and mediocrity of the rest of us. But there's time.
On-air commentators are:
- Phil & Robbie on NBC, with an Aussie lady whose name escapes me at the moment but I think they said she was an 11 time champion. No gender equity in my sporting knowledge.
- Some guy & Adam on GCN, at least for stage 1, I just caught a snippet.

Just have to say if Craddock had been in Australia things might have gone differently ... Heard he had a tough time getting there in the past...

I was watching the real time feed last night on Peacock and it ended with around 11k to go. Had to catch up this morning on the replay.

Way to drop the first good BF VG hex of the year, GrainBrain . Poor [rider of] Rohan.
I was all giddy seeing the results just now. Less so when I confirmed my team does not, in fact, contain Bilbao. I see no unholy alliance that will get me caught up in our little league.
IDK if something happened on the road, but seeing Froome finish minutes behind the laughing bunch pained me.

There I was, doing my best Erik Zabel imitation, dashing past GrainBrain for the line, putting his pantos in a bunch, feeling pretty darn celebratory. And along comes Hermann Freire! D'oh.
Congrats, Hermann. IDK where you came from, or why you didn't stay there 🤣, but well played, sir.
