Pic of racer smokin' the wizzak

Low content warning!

I heard that racers used to think that marijuana increased lung capacity before hills and such. I think I actually saw a pic once of a racer (could have been the tour) who was haulin' on a doobie. Anyone have a link? Or did I just dream this up?

There's a classic picture (black and white) of riders from the TdF smoking cigarettes. It looked like the picture was from the 40's or 50's. I've also seen a picture of Cipollini smoking (I'm pretty sure it was a cigarette) while he was riding, though I'm not sure if he was racing. Never seen a picture of a rider smoking weed.

I can tell you that mixing doobage with hard riding is a really bad mix. Don't know that it affects the lung capacity all that much, but it can really affect the muscle stamina (or so I've heard).

I believe "fume des herbes" means "smoking the herb". Who smokes weed with a filter? I don't know anybody who does. Who rolls joints that are perfectly cylindrical? Those are cigarettes!

BTW, thanks for the pictures Jack.

that's funny

In summer I had a bar job and quit, people I rode with said my riding improved I think the passive smoke is bad enough let alone full-on smoking. Also the mental side, if you are hurting and have to push it you don't want your body going "f*** off, this is your fault for smoking"

you konw some people can pull it off. i quit smoking after i graduated, but i still enjoy a cigar now and then. and i know for myself that i am not 100% 2-3 days after a smoke, so i practice abstinence during the season. i have a friend who used to smoke all the time (due to a summer job in construction) and he was also pretty good in the saddle. i could ride him off my wheel with some difficulty, and i could outclimb him him easily. but he really had a serious max speed on a sprint.
