Do teams conspire when they have mutual goals?

Tommorow alot of teams are pretty much out of it. What if say, for example Phonak, goes to Discovery for help on the condition they give the Disco rider the stage win? Or even a more likely scenario, someone teams up with either Lampre or Gerolsteiner to get either Cunego or Fothen the white jersey? Both riders are only a few seconds apart.

Does this stuff ever happen? I remember in one of the spring classics a team let a sprint out for a person on another team. I think it was Milram and Paolo Bettini.

It does not even take money, they just need to dislike someone enough. It seems to me in the 2003 Tour that several teams with GC leaders would send out one team at a time. Postal had to chase each one. Then the next would go. No one team could beat the Posties and if they all went at once - same thing.
But if they wore down the US Postal team at least Armstrong would lose.

It helps to have friends in the peleton as well, you help someone one day, you may get a little assistance when you need it as well.

Remember, its like this, all these guys work in the same office, just in different departments. There is office gossip, rumors, alliances etc... And becuase riders often sign 1 or 2 year contracts, or the sponsors sign 1 or 2 year contracts. A lot of guys ride for a different team, (department) every couple of years or so. So you get to know a lot of other company employees so to speak.

Good analogy....I refer to it as the 'favour bank'.......sometimes ya make a deposit & some times ya make a withdrawal!
