Operación Puerto - riders implicated vs. top 10 finishers in the TdF since '96
Thought this was interesting seeing all the *'s beside these names. These *'s are earned by either admitting to doping, being on current suspension from doping, have been suspended from doping, implicated in Operation Puerto, etc., etc.
The timing obviously isn't on - maybe Jan was clean in '96, etc. Maybe Pantani wasn't doping in '98. But thought the number of *'s was pretty crazy. Was anyone missed? Not sure. 1996 1 Bjarne Riis * 2 Jan Ullrich * 3 Richard Virenque * 4 Laurent Dufaux * 5 Peter Luttenberger 6 Luc Leblanc * 7 Piotr Ugrumov * 8 Fernando Escartin 9 Abraham Olano * (caffeine) 10 Tony Rominger 1997 1 Jan Ullrich * 2 Richard Virenque * 3 Marco Pantani * 4 Abraham Olano * (caffeine) 5 Fernando Escartin 6 Francesco Casagrande * 7 Bjarne Riis * 8 Jose Jimenez 9 Laurent Dufaux * 10 Roberto Conti 1998 1 Marco Pantani * 2 Jan Ullrich * 3 Bobby Julich 4 Christophe Rinero 5 Michael Boogerd 6 Jean-Cyril Robin 7 Roland Meier 8 Daniele Nardello 9 Giuseppe Di Grande 10 Axel Merckx 1999 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Alex Zulle * 3 Fernando Escartin 4 Laurent Dufaux * 5 Angel Casero * 6 Abraham Olano * (caffeine) 7 Daniele Nardello 8 Richard Virenque * 9 Wladimir Belli 10 Andrea Peron 2000 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Jan Ullrich * 3 Joseba Beloki * 4 Christophe Moreau * 5 Roberto Heras * 6 Richard Virenque * 7 Santiago Botero * 8 Fernando Escartin 9 Francisco Mancebo * 10 Daniele Nardello 2001 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Jan Ullrich * 3 Joseba Beloki * 4 Andrei Kivilev 5 Igor De Galdeano * 6 Franois Simon 7 Oscar Sevilla * 8 Santiago Botero * 9 Marcos Serrano * 10 Michael Boogerd 2002 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Joseba Beloki * 3 Raimondas Rumsas * 4 Santiago Botero * 5 Igor Gonzalez de Galseano * 6 José Azevedo 7 Francisco Mancebo * 8 Levi Leipheimer * 9 Roberto Heras * 10 Carlos Sastre 2003 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Jan Ullrich * 3 Alexandre Vinokourov * 4 Tyler Hamilton * 5 Haimar Zubeldia 6 Iban Mayo * 7 Ivan Basso * 8 Christophe Moreau * 9 Carlos Sastre 10 Francisco Mancebo * 2004 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Andreas Klöden * 3 Ivan Basso * 4 Jan Ullrich * 5 Jose Azevedo 6 Francisco Mancebo * 7 Georg Totschnig 8 Carlos Sastre 9 Levi Leipheimer * 10 Oscar Pereiro 2005 1 Lance Armstrong * 2 Ivan Basso * 3 Jan Ullrich * 4 Francisco Mancebo * 5 Alexandre Vinokourov * 6 Levi Leipheimer * 7 Mickael Rasmussen * 8 Cadel Evans 9 Floyd Landis * 10 Oscar Pereiro 2006 1 Floyd Landis * 2 Oscar Pereiro 3 Andreas Kloden * 4 Carlos Sastre 5 Cadel Evans 6 Denis Menchov 7 Cyril Dessel 8 Christophe Moreau * 9 Haimar Zubeldia 10 Michael Rogers 2007 1 Alberto Contador * 2 Cadel Evans 3 Levi Leipheimer * 4 Carlos Sastre 5 Haimar Zubeldia 6 Alejandro Valverde * 7 Kim Kirchen 8 Yaroslav Popovych 9 Mikel Astarloza 10 Oscar Pereiro 2008 1 Carlos Sastre 2 Cadel Evans 3 Bernhard Kohl * 4 Denis Menchov 5 Christian Vandevelde * 6 Fränk Schleck 7 Samuel Sánchez 8 Kim Kirchen 9 Alejandro Valverde * 10 Tadej Valjavec 2009 1. Interesting list. Thanks for sharing.
We always ellude to the fact that if someone like Jan Ullrich is doping, then surely Lance Armstrong is right? I guess the question we must also ask is, how good would some of these people be if they didn't dope? Furthermore, how much of an advantage are they really getting? hmm |
You need an asterisk by Alex Zulle - remember Festina?
Rumas was inplicated in a doping scandal imvolving his wife after his 3rd place in the 2002 Tour. I dont think he ever rode again as a paid professional.
Floyd wasn't in Puerto. His is a whole different case.

All these asterisks are making me dizzy. I honestly don't give a crap what the pro's do. As long as no one here in BF gets implicated i'm fine. Although some have been banned, it wasn't for banned substances.

Laurent Dufaux, Christophe Moreau, Raimondas Rumsas
Wasn't meant to be an exhaustive list... am updating it as some more knowledgeable minds chirp in. Updated again.
So, what your saying in this list is that doping works? Profound.
Try setting the dopers in an alternate color. That should really make them (the number of them) stand out.
What no * for Iban Mayo...err I mean Ivan May?
And whatever you do don't put one by Bjarne Riis...he only wants to talk about the future not bring up things that happened 10 years ago..... |
casagrande was caught, and you still haven't updated IGdeG
So Bobby Julich was really the second American to win the Tour back in 1998?
USA! USA! USA!! |
another * for less than exhaustive list: luc leblanc.
Give Pereiro a star...he's too sleazy not to have one. His behavior of late makes me question his integrity.
Perhaps update again,
Oscar Pereiro. http://www.velonews.com/news/fea/12277.0.html I'll agree that the link at this point is nothing but wild speculation. But that nickname belongs to someone and when you read that story and hear Oscar's response and attitude of being DNA tested - could he appear any more guilty/hiding something? Oh but then again, we already know he dopes with an approved asthma medicine known as a performance enhancer - right, asthma, sure you do. "'I am not Urko,' insists Tour runner-up" How many times did Basso state the same about Birilo? OK Oscar, real simple, prove it with DNA. |
Given his form at last years TDF it's apparent Mayo was as close to clean as it gets.
Did Igor change his name from 2001 to 2002? lol Or maybe this list http://forums.sportingnews.com/viewtopic.php?p=1964090 is wrong. They have one or two more listed for OP.
Yeah, Luc Leblanc admitted doping, and Francesco Casagrande was busted.
