dog in the promos
in one of the less-shown promos for the tour i see what appears to be some cyclists running into a dog crossing the road. what's the story here? thanks!

A rider named Burghart (sp) when coming down a hill a couple stages ago hit a fat labrador retriever. He almost got stopped, hit it at maybe 10 mph. Destroyed his front wheel. He got a new bike and was able to continue. The dog was fine as well.

found the video, glad the biker and dog are okay, but can i inquire why his wheel just taco'd like that? seems like the wheel would hold up to a little more force than that. yeah it was force from the side, but not from any great speed...

From what I saw, the rider braked hard and just before impact with the dog, he turned his bars and front wheel 90 degrees. It was probably a super light weight wheel that could not handle the lateral stress, so it tacoed. the dog was hit flat with the side of the wheel add santered off apparently uninjured.

Several years ago I was riding a motorcycle down an avenue with telephone poles in the median. A big dog came running out of the bushes chasing a lady across the street and I hit the dog at 50 mph as I could not swerve due to the poles. I hit the dog broad side with my front tire pointed staight ahead. The impact launched me a yard into the air and knocked one foot of the foot peg, tilting the bike sideways. As if in slow motion, I thought this is going to hurt. Luckily I landed rubber side down and did not crash. I stopped and found dog food sizzling all over the front of the engine. The impact drove the tubed tire into the rim for a split second as there was dog hair caught between the rim and tire. The wheel and rim were not damaged. I turned around and pulled the dog of the road which died quietly a few minutes later. There was a big depression in the side of the dog, so it must have had massive internal injuries. The owner came by later saying he had just fed the dog and let him out (breaking the leash law).
