Ricco: "I want to ride like a doped up dead guy"

From Cyclingnews.com:
Italy's Riccardo Riccò opened up the throttle to distance his rivals on the Tour de France's Col d'Aspin in a move similar to the late Marco Pantani to gain a solo win in Bagnères de Bigorre. ...
"We were talking yesterday and [Ricco] said he wanted to try an attack similar to one of Pantani, and look, he followed through on his proposition," Piepoli said following the stage.

Look at me! I ride just like the most tragic doper in the history of cycling!

There's a velonews article on the front page with the headline "Ricco Rides Right into Questions".

I have no idea if Ricco is clean or not, but I found it in relatively bad taste to feature such a lengthy article on rumors and questions. If he had tested positive, missed 3 doping tests, or some guy comes forward to talk about how Ricco asked him to ship bovine blood booster in a shoebox to Italy (like last years Rassmussen), then I would understand such dedicated coverage. Suspicious? I don't know, perhaps, but this article seems to be doing nothing but fanning the flames.

You forget that Pantani is a hero in Italy still. The Carrera factory still displays his bike. Anyway, can't you see past the drugs to appreciate his style. It is the same for me with Vinokurov. I know he cheated now, but at least he rode with panache, unlike many.

Agreed, but it just sounds awkward to us non-Italians for someone to say, "I rode just like one of the biggest dopers in cycling today." There are no Irish swimmers that say before a race, I'm going to go at it just like Michelle Smith today!

Wow, never been to Italy, have you?

Pantani never tested positive for any controlled substance, he was no more of a doper than LA. He did have a substance abuse problem. Let us know if that happens to you or a family member and we can give you the same amount of sympathy.

His death was tragic. To die alone in a hotel room must be a horrible way to go.

But, lest we forget, he was removed from the Giro for a hematocrit level of 52%. Doesn't necessarily mean he did EPO, but never the less he was tossed that year.

Was he a great person? Hmmm...oh yeah I forgot about all the animal shelters he started. Or maybe you think he was great because of the consultative work he did with the UNHCR? Fair enough. Personally I was most impressed by his work with Medecins sans Frontieres.

ricco's attack on the aspin and the way he kept on driving it was very pantani-esque. it was beautiful. all he needed was the il pirata head band, celeste bike, and his toes pointed down at the bottom of his pedal stroke.

I've never been a Pantani fan, but I appreciate the way he rode, and his explosive power.
Never much cared for him, then I read both 'The Death of Marco Pantani' and 'Man on the Run' and
I have a different perspective on Pantani, maybe a little less harsh, and a lot more sympathetic
for a very tragic figure.

As for Ricco, he emulated his hero. and lets face it Hero worship is rather blind is it not? I could
well imagine a young cyclist in Italy, watching Marco's early career and never believing the
accusations were true. It would be quite simple to go along with everything that Marco and
his media relations team said, it was a conspiracy.

That said, Ricco was beautiful, and I'm not sure that anyone in the peloton can
match that kind of explosive power. While I'm no fan of his whinging and laying blame
for his losses, I sure like his style.

I've had mixed feelings about Pantani. In my opinion, the words "heroic" and "tragic" are equally descriptive of his life.

As far as Ricco goes, I noticed that when he launched his attack, he was even sprinting out of the saddle with his hands on the drops, just like Pantani. I kind of wonder how much of this is idol worship, and how much of it is seeking the adoration of the tifosi? I'm sure that he's aware of how much attention he gets by lobbing bombastic sound bites. Is the attention the goal, or just a side effect? Hmmm... If he grows a goatee and convinces Saunier Duvall to pick up Bianchi as a sponsor, the tifosi will be delirious with delight.

Sure, Pantani is an anti-hero of sorts, but posting pictures of cats with no text/discussion is childish. it might seem strange to us; I 'spose Michelle Smith is no longer a hero in Ireland, just like Dwayne Chambers in the UK. But Pantani is still a hero in Italy. His death was a sad tale, and his accomplishments whilst living impressive. And he rode cool bikes, whereas Lance only rode Treks. Can't you see? Cool bikes = hero!

Very good, but something that probably went over most heads out here.

Had Astana not been in the Giro, Ricco would probably be going for the double. Pretty amazing stuff.
