I think best in a single place and time would be Bob Roll bringing Andy Hampsten his cold weather gear at the Gavia Pass in the '88 Giro. If only for the awesome narrative. Bob Roll can make any story fun if you enjoy his sense of humor, but he really does spin a fun yarn about an epically brutal stage.

You have to be joking. Usually you are spot on about cycling but Roche did that Tour pretty much on his own Stage 17 when he almost killed himself he was pretty much alone.

Giro - Roche would have been farked without Schepers. And Schepers help at the Tour on the Villard de Lans stage and particularly the Morzine stage was invaluable.

Besides that, Roche was not alone. He must have got writers cramp signing cheques paying off the Fagor and Del Tongo boys after the Tour.

One of several. The wiki article you site is very good. One sad thnig is that to this day many believe that this was the only plot and late in the war. The earliest I know of was in '38. Fizzled because it was a plot to depose, not kill and it depended on things not going well for Germany. Things went better than even a madman could hope. BTW that plot had a plot within a plot. Hitler was to be captured by a comando group med by Major Heinz. Unknown to almost everyone was that Heinz and Hans Oster had decided that Hitler would tragically be caught in a crossfire.

See Hans Oster and Canaris. Number 1 and 2 men in the Abwer, German military intelegence and working against Hitler from early on.

Yates is my man because of the lack of the strength of the team he rode with. By the time Big George came around, Motorola had improved their team significantly and George was less of a domestique and more of an on-road leader. And of course, I sure George learned much from his short stint riding with Yates.

BTW, after reading several comments regarding Hincapie's performance this year, for my money he's riding better than ever. He's handling his role of on road captain, and always seems to be where he's needed, be it in the lead out, or working on the hills.

That does raise a quetion doesn't it? SDoes having put inthe work for someone else qualify you? Smoothie already mentioned Mig working for Delgado, which he did for several years and very well. You can get pretty high up the list of great riders and find that at least for a while they paid their dues.
