Next great American TdF GC contender?

Just wondering if there are any phenoms out there that I don't know about and would be interesting to follow. LeMond talked about Phinney during an interview, but he seems so far away.

Phinney is a big kid. I think he's the next Cancellara, probably not the next up the Alpe d'Huez.

My favorite local hero just moved over from tri to road racing about a year ago. Started riding Cat4 in '06 (still tri, too, at this point), upgraded to 3 in March this year, Cat 2 in May, and Cat 1 this month. Won the first P/1/2 RR he entered as a 1 (Dayton, TN), and I know he won a stage in the Tour of Jamaica and was leading GC at that point, but I don't know his final placing. Last weekend was a bad weekend - he finished a lowly 4th in a 1/2 RR.

Look for him nationally soon if he continues climbing at this pace.

It's too bad he wasted so much time as a triathlete. He's now 26.

Might cut down on some of the temptations the older riders have to cheat.

I have to agree with bananatugger, I think Tom Danielson could be real good. Though it does seem like he's been around for a while. Anyone know how old he is?

He's also astonishingly flimsy.

Every time something other than his feet touches the tarmac, he gets hurt.
