I don't think you had a ton of people go out and buy Trek road bikes because of Lance. Some may have gotten into the sport because of him, but I've been riding again regularly since 08 and even in a major metro market like NYC, from my observations, Trek wasn't really a dominant brand because higher-end shops generally don't carry them. Around here, the money goes toward high-end Cervelos, Cannondales, Specialized and Giants.

I also don't see how there's any downside to more people coming into cycling. People getting fit is good for all of us because it will lower the obesity rate, which we all pay for right now.

2) ressurecting his public image, to a) get public admoration, and b) potential endorsement deals, and

3) get back in the good graces of his foundation, and make money off that again ( the commercial side of Livestrong made money for Armstrong.)

This all about Armstrong's desire for money, fame, and adoration.

Otherwise, he could simply ride off into the sunset, clutching the money he's already got.
Just a brief point here, what's getting Lance off criminally speaking is the statute of limitations has passed in regard to a perjury charge for his statements under oath that we now know he's going to contradict later this week. The bigger damage lies in the prospect of civil lawsuits, which could have a big impact on him financially.

Went to the other recent Lance post. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...nfessing/page2

Interesting to note what Commodus mentions:
"Armstrong is still fighting to keep the details of his ongoing 'whistleblower' suit with Floyd under wraps. I believe as of two weeks ago his laywers failed in their final attempts, so he will be eventually called to testify and be vulnerable to perjury charges at that time.

Since it now looks like he will be forced to, this is all simply an attempt to gain maximum benefit from a preemptive confession."
This would certainly explain why he would go on the Oprah show.

Wanna bet? Just because none will admit to it now, doesn't mean there aren't thousands (perhaps tens of thousands) of US Postal-replica and Livestrong-Replica bikes out hidden away in garages all across America. I would say that I've seen a Livestrong, Radio Shack, US Postal, Discovery, and Astana jersey in at least 2/3 to 3/4 of every one of my rides in the last 5 years. As PT Barnum once said, "You'll never go broke catering to the lowest common denominator in America." And there is decidedly a downside to importing vast swathes of the LCD into my sport.

I'm fairly young (under 30) and I would say Lance Armstrong is the reason I watch pro cycling (got interested in it at all), ride a road bike and why my first bike was a Trek. As a kid I was into sports..played tennis, rollerbladed, basketball..and rode my bike all over the neighborhood. Nothing special..just mountain and 10 speed bikes. I'm a big sports fan (baseball, basketball, tennis etc. , all the major and some minor American sports) and so I watched SportsCenter growing up. Of course pro riding got little to no attention in mainstream media until Lance came along..I heard and started watching the Tour de France (and other riding events) because of Lance..no doubt about it...I would have never heard of the thing as a kid and teen if it wasn't for him. When I got my first real job with real money to buy a non walmart/target bike I wanted to get a (entry level) road bike and guess what brand I was most knowledgeable of at the time...Trek! No doubt about it... it was because of Lance Armstrong and the Discovery/USPS teams. He definitely influenced a great deal of kids and none kids in this country to embrace the sport and the brands he represented. I'm not embarrassed to say these things..at the time I didn't know what we all know now, it's just how I was introduced to the sport.

I never owned a yellow livestrong bracelet (no real reason why)...but I saw many people with them on over the years, even after it was clear he probably hadn't accomplished what he did clean. I'm sure each and every one of them had their own reasons for still wearing one.

I, like most people realized Lance Armstrong was a cheater a long time ago and it has just been a long process of confirmation. I will be watching on Thursday just to see what he exactly says.

ftfm.
Sorry for indirectly calling you a dope, DVR. I made the mistake of assuming that most everyone who discovered cycling as a result of Lance were naturally his guerrilla partisans.
I sure bought into the whole "Hinault is a bad guy." line when I was a teenager watching Lemond in 86 and 87. Check out the DVD if you get a chance--the propaganda and public opinion manipulation are comically brazen. Perhaps even Armstrong's growing up watching those Tours had a hand in the clusterF-word we're witnessing now. Also check out the Coors Classic when Hinault beat Davis Phinney on a stage.

Why is LA admitting he doped now?

I just can't believe it's because his conscience caught up to him and I find it hard to believe that he's doing it so he can compete in some triathlons.

That leave the financial aspect. Could someone explain to me why it's financially advantageous to come clean now as opposed to keep stonewalling it? It just seems like he's giving up one of the cards that he could use in any deal making.

Thanks,

My first thought was that Oprah is shelling out big bucks for the interview that will help him offset some of the expense from pending litigation expense and judgments.

I figure he's setting up for the movie/book deal. He also needs to get it out under his direction before the Bruyneel arbitration hearing, if that ever happens.

So he can EARN again.

He needs to rebrand as does Oprah. A perfect match.
