Giro de Italia

So once the Giro begins in Italy, can one expect that the roads/course will get better and thus eliminating a lot of these crashes? At first I thought, ok, they had a crash here and there that first day, but everyday so far. Something's gotta give.

yeahhhh no. the giro is not exactly renowned for "safe and sane" routes
and courses. once the riders get past the first week, some of the jitters will be gone
but not all the road furniture, trolley/train tracks, "wide" roads that quickly funnel down
from 8 abreast to 4 abreast, sharp turns in the last 3 km, etc, will have been eliminated
from the race. expect more crashes and pray your favorite(s) isn't/aren't affected.

Its not necessarily the course that's the danger, poor bike-handling skills, inexperience, being tense & nervous & the approach the teams have to these stages that makes it a danger too.

Good point. Since all the good riders went to the TOC this year, this Giro's being contested by newcomers to the sport.

California still attracted a great roster this year. I still stick by it being the better tune up race too & in the best Country in the world.

Because its only the experienced riders that have exceptional bike-handling skills.

Do you have any idea whatsoever of how many hours a pro spends per year in the saddle? Any idea how many hours in the saddle over the years they spent just getting to the pros?

Poor bike-handling skills? Inexperience? Being tense and nervous? I think you have a very active imagination.

I guess I figured that they're in Amsterdam, maybe the city roads are narrow with lots of road furniture. Then they'll get to Italy with more open road courses and mountain stages and all that becomes less of a factor.

Announcers were discussing the poor conditions of the roads in Amsterdam being one of the main reasons so many early crashes were showing up. Maybe they are catching some second hand Amsterdam smoke as well! I expect to see fewer crashes and related incidents as the race progresses but the later stages look like soul crushers. Fatigue will create a dynamic that could lead to more carnage. Surviving this race has to be hard work like nothing I have experienced.

I hope they are drinkin a lot of beet root juice!

Did you guys see the Boonen crash?.

And I will reiterate again for the people not in the know.

Its not necessarily the course that's the danger, poor bike-handling skills, being tense & nervous & the approach the teams have to these stages that makes it a danger too.

Knowledge is the power. botto, Sea Green Sky, umd, Metzinger stopped educating themselves years ago.

Trolls.

No, but I saw the aftermath. Have a link to video of it?

He's had more than his share over the past 15 months or so.

Unfortunately you can't make the characters mumble in an Irish accent.
