Paul Mach (from Davis, CA), Bissell Pro Cycling, was part of an early four-rider break. He will wear the Climber's jersey during Stage 2.

Team Jelly Belly is a personal favorite. It's good to see them posting mid-pack results in an elite field.

Anyone know how Boonen crashed at the end of the race? He looked pretty beat up. Will he start tomorrow?

There's a rumor going around that one of the motorcycles hit a rider in front of Boonen and he went down on top of them.

I don't think there were any motorcycles in the middle peleton during the laps around the capital...

What I've read so far makes it sound more like a lot of fresh riders jockying for position. A rider's blog mentioned ten wide. This stage was not too physically demanding and I suspect that gave a lot of people hope for a good position.

I was watching live online and the announcers said that everyone involved in the crash (Tom Boonen importantly) would receive the same time as the group he was riding with because the race was inside of 3k. Since everyone was still in a pack, he should be listed as having the same time everyone else, no?

As long as he finished, yes.

I'm surprised Cavendish and Haedo didn't come in a second or two ahead of the peloton. They had a bit of a gap.

I can't imagine there were many scragglers in the stage, pretty much everyone should have the same time.
