Question about post-race rub down

I just watched a documentary about the Tour and it showed the riders getting their upper body rubbed down with a pad. What does this do?

It's probably part of a recovery massage. They may be using a pad to reduce friction or soreness. Or maybe because it spreads the force out over a larger area. Which helps flush body toxins out into the lymph system for removal. It might also be to help the upper body recover from staying in a similar position for several hours.
