How many stage wins are possible?
Mark Cavendish the Isle of Man sprinter has surpassed the 12-stage victory tally of several notable sprinters including German great Erik Zabel, Italian Mario Cipollini and Australian Robbie McEwen.
I've heard an ex pro saying he might be capable of 40 wins (not in this race obviously but over he's career)
Does anyone else think this is possible?

I think it is possible. He's still quite young.

I think the 6 stages Cavendish took last year is the most I'll see in my lifetime and I doubt anyone will beat Merckx 34 stages either. Cavendish is at 12 or 13 or something right now, isn't he?

Cav's got 13 wins so far.
Cav's a beast of a sprinter but I wonder how he will go in the rest of this TDF without his main lead out man Renshaw who he's given a lot credit to his wins.

Mario Cipollini 42 wins (Giro d'Italia) so I think 40 for Cav is very feasible in the TDF.

That would be impressive if he could keep it up, but I think he will eventually be challenged. Right now he has an exceptional team, and a method to the sprint with the whole team leading him out that really has never been done this well in the past. Even this year we've seen all the other teams trying to do the same thing, but they just haven't quite mastered it yet, nor do they have a decent enough sprinter to pull it off. Eventually though, he won't be winning 4 to 6 stages each Tour.

Petacchi took nine stage wins in the Giro some years back -- 2004? I think so, since I remember it being the same Giro which Cunego won.
Anyways, barring injury I can see Cavendish reach the 40-stage mark before he retires.

Which ponits out the kind of sprinter he is. He needs a team designed to support him, or at the least he has only proven he can win consistently with that setup. How long until he loses Renshaw (who is good enopughto win himself) or have sponsorship issues, or have his team land a GC contender. 30-40 is possible if everything stays perfect. I donlt know of a single rider whose career stayed perfect.
