Tour de France starting in Qatar
https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/sc/news?slug=reu-tourqatar
With the tour's recent rise in popularity, I can see people are working on ways to make it more profitable and one way to it internationalize it and essentially turn it into a three-week-long racing series with races all over the world, with lots of rest/transit days.
Personally, I watch the TDF as much to see France as to see the riders. I have little interest in watching the TDF in Qatar.

The article says "Qatar interested in hosting". That does not mean it is going to happen or even that it is likely to happen.
There were rumors a few years ago that the Giro was going to start in Washington DC, but obviously that never happened.

ridiculous. it's one thing to have it visit a neighboring country or one just across the channel;
it's quite another to visit a different continent unless it's northern africa/morocco but what's the point? that's a giro-style transfer...
maybe the tour of qatar could start in france this winter?

They've already proved that with enough money, you can buy a World Cup regardless of how good your bid is. I can't imagine it being different for the Tour. Everything has its price!
I do agree that it is a ridiculous idea, but then, so is the idea of Qatar hosting a World Cup...

11 Years after the 1st (and only) Irish rider won the TdF in 1987 they held the prologue and first two stages in Ireland. I still have the official guide.
Maybe in 2022 they'll start the Tour in Australia.
Jan Ullrich won in 1997 so he got on the cover.

Eh, Qatar would just air-condition the entire course. No problem!
