On behalf of sci_homme – this morning, while being subjected to Stage 15, DH asked me why is it we always hear about some football, basketball, baseball and other …..ball (up to and including – gasp! – golf) players spectacular antics, like cheating, fast cars, spousal abuse, palatial mansions, occasional doping, etc. And their women seem to be only marginally better behaved. At the same time there is almost never anything like that about cyclists, outside of occasional doping scandals, of course. Mind you, he is not all that into playing ball either.

Please, do not bring up 2010 Schleck/O'Grady bar-crawling incident. I already have informed DH of that.

There is a fairly new movie (2010) on the life of Hugo Koblet, who won the Tour de France in 1951. That year he was so dominating that on his way to winning a stage he would splash cologne on himself, comb his hair, blow kisses to the girls, and only then would he cross the line and start his stopwatch to wait for everyone else. In the time trial he pulled next to Gino Bartali, who started 8 minutes ahead of him, and gallantly put his water bottle in Bartali's holder, before speeding off to beat everyone else by 12 minutes. The second place finisher in the Tour that year claimed he won, and when a journalist mentioned that Koblet finished first, he replied, "Yeah, but I was the first human."

Hugo Koblet ended up driving into a tree at high speed after his marriage with a model failed. He was a flamboyant character for sure. Anyway, if anyone wants to check out the movie, it's called "Hugo Koblet: Pedaleur de Charme".

Because there is no money in reporting it. Cycling is followed by a select few and wasting air time/print space on a sport very few understand and like isnt financially responsible to the advertisers.

Except for Lance, how many cyclists has the average English-speaking tabloid reader heard of? On the other hand, I think Jan Ullrich used to get quite a lot of coverage in Germany, whether he was driving drunk, taking party drugs, etc etc.

I think the answer is found in the "how much do cyclists earn" thread. In the sports that feature athletes behaving poorly even the minimum wage for a pro often allows a pretty indulgent lifestyle. Where as the typical UCI domestique usually barely makes a living wage.
