Definitely. Maybe he wasn't just being coy when he said he wasn't going for green. He has no chance for victory today, so he might as well have used all of his energy there. I'm not sure he has the mentality to go for minor points like that. It's either first place or nothing for him. Serves him well at the end of races, but not for the green jersey. It could be a tight race and he needs all the points he can get.

In the UK press he's been mixed on his green jersey chances. Of course the UK press has a vested interest.

In theory this one intermediate sprint should suit him.

Early chess.

Cav also popped his knees out a little and looked down once he gave up on the sprint. It didn't look like he had a mechanical issue, but he looked at his bike like he did. Either way, he swerved left and right and almost caused a crash.

Who are Moviestar riding for in the GC this year? Arroyo?

Btw Gilbert takes this stage "easliy". Last k's are perfect for him!

Twitchy.

So who was left in the back group after the crash?

kanedact 07-02-11 09:35 AM

Contador. 31 seconds. Heh...

Jay-W 07-02-11 09:39 AM

wow.

Go cuddles.

rollin 07-02-11 09:41 AM

1'20" off!

USAZorro 07-02-11 09:42 AM

What's the penalty for being an idiot spectator? Should be severe.

DXchulo 07-02-11 09:42 AM

Holy crap. Gilbert made that look easy, but Evans looks like the big winner today.

kanedact 07-02-11 09:43 AM

Impressive!

Jay-W 07-02-11 09:46 AM

Cancellara.

diphthong 07-02-11 09:48 AM

hell of a lot more exciting than some 8km prologue. loved that first day's finish.

Kind of Blued 07-02-11 09:56 AM

Wow. Stages like this are why I think predicting bike races is silly.

Was Cadel crying during that interview? He sounded like a little girl.

DXchulo 07-02-11 10:02 AM

This is going to be interesting with the 3km rule and how they decide to enforce everything.

JoelS 07-02-11 10:10 AM

Very interesting conclusion to the stage today.

He always sounds like that.

Good on Cuddles.

Too bad for AS he got caught in the same mess as Contradoper. Wonder if Lepard will shift their focus to FS.

I'm not so sure it was 100% the spectator's fault.. it looked like he/she was off the road and whoever crashed ran into him.

so, are the results on the TDF website right now (AC +1:20) final?

or have they yet to decide about the 3km thing...?

Those are right for now. I'm not sure if Sanchez and Contador will appeal or what.

It doesn't seem fair that the 3rd group was caught behind the 2nd group's crash inside of 3km, but they get no credit for that. Their gap was ~40 seconds before the 2nd crash.

Yeah, results are up: http://www.letour.fr/2011/TDF/LIVE/u...ent/index.html

SouthFLpix 07-02-11 10:43 AM

Gilbert won as expected, but the big news is Contador down 1'14 in the very first stage. That's going to take a pretty vicious mountain attack to bring back, especially if his legs are not 100% after the hard Giro. Looks like this TDF is going to be very close.

Hopefully the outcome of the race will be decided by the riders, rather then by crashes (no doubt, there will be more to come).

kenji666 07-02-11 10:45 AM

So, Lance is still in contention?

Interesting ruling. Looks like the did the 3km ruling for the first group. But the second group that got held up more by the second crash got actual time. Looked the second group was about 30-40 seconds back when the second crash happened from the first group. The second group got help up again, but lost actual time because they weren't up there when the crash happened.

I gotta think an appeal is coming. Will they win is the question.

Not a chance. The biggest losers are two Spanish guys.
