vuelta 2011 in less than a month-favorites?

so now that all the july fireworks are over, it's time for the vuelta!
who's gonna race it? i would think that sammy sanchez and joaquin
rodriguez would be the 1 and 1a favorites with defending champ
vincenzo nibali right up there as well. the inclusion of the angliru on
stage 15 would seem to favor nibali less than the other two. and
what of contador? does he race it and if so, what kinda legs is he gonna
have after the giro/tdf? hoping we get more than a few of this year's
tour de france recent revelations racing this one too...

Are any of the guys who crashed out early from the Tour going to try? Wiggins, Horner, Brajkovich, Van DenBroeke?

Brajkovic is definitely riding the Vuelta. If Wiggo were going to try, I think he would have a good chance at a podium spot. He actually looked more impressive then Cadel Evans in the Dauphine, and I mean both in the mountains as well as the time trial.

Of course, there are Spanish riders like Igor Anton and Joaquim Rodriguez who specifically try to peak for the Vuelta. I still think Wiggo could do very well.

in order to support the effort to make the US of A NOT a "cycling backwater" I'm going to watch the Colorado race as a first priority. (I'll DVR the other!)

I wonder why the USA Pro Cycling Challenge organizers decided to run it at the same time as the Vuelta. You'd think that they wouldn't want to try to compete against the Vuelta for teams/riders. At any rate, I'll be watching the Pro Cycling Challenge. I don't have access to Universal Sports and the Internet feed I purchased last year was very low quality.

I heard today that Wiggo was going to try if he was healed up. He'd be my pick.

How about Carlos Sastre? I know he's up there in age.. but he's tanned, rested, and pissed off from his team not being invited to the Tour de France.

Do these guys just have bags of spare collarbones lying around? It's pretty ridiculous how fast they get back into the game.

I'll be watching the US Pro Cycling deal in person, but I'll be rootin' for Joaquim Rodriguez if he's in the Vuelta. That guy always lights things up with monster attacks. Very fun to watch.

Of course Nibali may try to defend as the reigning champion as well, we can't count him out. He put on a very courageous effort against Contador in the Giro this year.

I know exactly what you mean! I broke both of my wrists a month ago and I feel like its going to be forever before I am back in the shape I was.

Contador will ride the 2012 Vuelta, so we know who will win next year... but this year?

My money is on Samu.

Same here. I'm about to start a thread for that.

I'm also planning on going to the GP Cycliste de Montreal. It's the closest World Tour race at the moment, and since the GF and I love Monteal it will be a nice weekend.
