bettini was more of a s***starter in terms of breakaways from farther out and was a bit more versatile rider (in the running to win more stages/races) than gilbert. but yah...dave f is right...when gilbert is on form like he finally is at the end of this year (and all of last), he isn't placing second.

Gilbert's power for efforts lasting a minute or a few, is something to behold.
Everyone knew he'd go right there, but...

Highly doubt that.
BMC have two potential TDF GC threats, plus numerous other "stars".
Cav would be back in the same position he was at with Sky.
I say Cav goes to Orica, where they have the focus on stage wins and one-days.
Goss may be put out a bit, but then they have ridden on High Road together.

Bettini would've jumped a little earlier, making Gilbert respond bringing Valverde with him. Then there would've been a three-way sprint that would've been talked about for years.

Said it before, f.... spaniards just f-ed up big time at the bottom of the climb, it was clear what the belgians were going to do and and with 4 riders in there it was clear what they had to do... a train parallel to the belgian or just a 1 to 1 wheel, freire with boonen and valverde with gilbert and wait for the best.
In a matter of fact i thought that the spaniards were going to do a train, when I saw what happened, all of them looking at the stars I saw gilbert just going for win solo. Spain execution was terrible bad. As for Freire, he did not have the legs, valverde had nothing to do with that, probably he will be complaining for the next 5 years about valverde leaving him alone, the whole spanish team was in the wrong place specially Freire.
Well, great race

not winning any more races of any note for quite some time either due to (at least one but possibly multiple choices): injuries, bad luck, bad legs, team infighting, doping non-negative, etc, et al...

Contador worked for the team, i thought he was going to be in the front too.. If you guys see the videos the belgians, the spanish and the italians had the most riders. Spain had 5 guys in the last 3 km and all of them together, suddenly some sh...t happens and they were just nowhere to be found...
I was contador sure i would be pissed off... worked the whole day for 4 guys that screwed up at the end. If contador had worked half of what he did he could have been gone with gilbert (if he was in the right place obviously)
Well now BMC has like 4 world champions, hope they do better the next season.

i wasn't going to be the one to point it out. i truly hope it doesn't hit gilbert as he is one of the most exciting riders in the peleton. it's not like he's some schmo
that 'lucked' into the rainbow jersey (there have been a few really? winners). love to see him contend in most of the classics and the punchy/uphill sprint finishes
at stage races. as another rider, what do you do when you know he's gonna go? try a preemptive strike? follow his wheel? hope he runs out of gas? gotta be demoralizing when you realize 'it's gilbert time!' i think the best bet is to go from farther out than his usual attack with < 10km left if the finish favors him and he's in good form that day.
