Regardless of how much UCI was involved in turning a blind eye towards the doping culture, the recent revelations indicated that Doping has been rampant in the sport, to the point that all top level American Cyclists in the pro-peloton during that time (horner the only exception) have admitted to doping - not only that, much of the entire peloton has been implicated as part of that doping culture; regardless of how much progress has been mande in cleaning up the sport (allegedly?), now Skoda and Rabobank are leaving with their funding because the image of the sport has suffered so much damage (again, one could argue if the recent efforts are enough to clean the image of the sport depicted by the USADA report from years back). Additionally, any pro-cyclist is now either suspect of, or assumed, to be doping (read all the comments regarding bradley and sky during the tour, for example).

I think we are quickly arriving at a point where the only resolution for the UCI is to come up with a Truth and Reconcilliation Program for all Pro's, perhaps with NO punishment for all that come clean - their images will suffer enough, and i think ALL of those guys doped back then, so no point in punshing anyone - put some asterisks on all results and move forward). Let all the facts out, with all details, methods, names, etc. From that point on, you dope, you are banned for life - fair or unfair, tainted beef or no tainted beef....forced by your team leader or voluntarily...no second chances). Make cycling the poster child for Zero-Tolerance.

i think if the sport wants to keep sponsors and a image of fairness, the UCI needs a major ALT+CTRL+DEL.

Before you do that, cast a wider eye to other sports. NFL, IOC, FIFA, MLB... How many of the bodies truly promote sport above profit generation, hmm? Also, have a closer look through USADA's Reasoned Argument. What I am amazed about is not that LA doped (I decided that 14 or so years ago), it's how easy it was to test negative. Seriously, take EPO in the evening and it's gone by morning? If that is the case, then ask yourself how Jamaican, Chinese, American, [insert other nation] athletes in [insert any sport here] can suddenly pop out of nowhere and demolish the opposition so comprehensively? I don't disagree with your verdict, but you should think about including all professional sports in your judgment.

Why should the OP do that? This is, after all, a cycling-centered forum.

plus, Cycling is the one going through this image crisis, and i fear it will start losing even more sponsors...with no ticket sales to bank, sponsorship for teams and events is a bigger deal for cycling...

I wonder what name the new cycling governing body would adopt?

I was fearing a major reduction in sponsorship. It would seem that that has begun. I posted something about the Lance ordeal on my Facebook page and one of my friends cried "witch hunt" and I tried to explain to him that it is not Lance alone that is the problem. He was just the biggest fish in the pond, and that, especially as cycling fans living in North America, this could seriously curtail the amount of racing we get.....that teams will be reduced and mopney will not be available to promote the sport, thus sending it back to where it was pre 1980s. While the idea of any "cheaters" going unpunished, I agree with the OP....let's cut and run and start fresh. Make all of the pro riders at every level have some sort of code of conduct and MUCH stricter testing and penalties, like 5 year ban first offense and lifetime thereafter. I, for one, am tired of the doper of the week club during race season and I would think the riders who are clean(if any) would grow tired of the assumptions and the guilty by association mentality. I have even had people ask me if I cared about the sport being so dirty...hey think everyone shoul;d be allowed to dope all they want and let the records be damned.....made me want to scream.

Fair point well made. There are, though, wider ramifications to this. The paradigm of an ease of doping and a corrupt governing body motivated by money extends to nearly every sport. Not that I am a fan of any body that thinks governing sock heights is a good idea, but I can't think of any sports body that would be a good model to use in rebuilding the UCI.

I agree completely with your post. However I've always known it as CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Yes, that would be known as the correct version.
