Tour de France assignment for school

So my professor wants everyone to do a presentation on a specific topic so when TDF popped up, I jumped right on it. :) Anyways it's a 4-5min presentation so I need to know a little about the topic and hope some of you guys might help. Basically I need to know how many total miles there is, the different types of stages, why is it more appreciated in Europe as oppose to the US, how to actually be part of the tour, ect..
I already have some basic ideas of the tour..

Thanks in advance

The official Tour website should get you started...

four / five minutes is not much time...So a short presentation...A source I like..
A former cyclist who writes of his experiences...Bob Roll...."Tour De France." Emphasis is on the 04 race, but still a fair amount of historical perspective...It takes on somewhat of a personal perspective too....Gives you a good description of the usual routing and the racers roll in the TDF...Worth reading.

Don't forget Jock Boyer, the 1st american to ride the tour and a true pioneer of american cycling abroad..

So Cal...Boyer..First American to do TDF...He is in our bike history books...But, did not he later flip out..Drugs or something...Is he not presently living in a California prison? Quite a downfall, if that is the case...
Cycling to me, keeps my head clear, not the other way around..

you'll want to talk about what the different jerseys are and how each are won. i would mention how the mountains are where a lot of the race happens for the overall, but the flats are where the sprinters battle it out. sort of a race within a race perspective. you might want to mention the time trials (both individual and team).
