A paintball gun would be better. I'd love to shoot one of those drunk clowns in the butt and see them leap.

Please don't take offense to this, but the fact that you're older makes this comment that much more hilarious for me! Fantastic idea!

Looked like more aggressive than usual positioning of motorbikes and cars between riders and fans today.
Also, at what point is a butt slap a sticky butt slap vs a push...

Yes, they need to run a street sweeper ahead of the racers and chop off extremities of the nut cases crowding the roads.
Question: What on earth happened to TJ Van Garderen today (7/20) ?? At one point he was said to have a chance at the stage and a few minutes later he was gone, not in the TV views, not shown crossing the finish AND missing completely from the list of riders at the official Tour website. What is going on for TJ ?

The riders can put on brass knuckles at the base of the final climb... Or maybe carbon fiber knuckles.

Motorcycle riders were trying to ward off runners on stage 20 and Froome slapped one guy who was running just inches from him.
I have two proposals, either will effectively end the plague of obnoxious runners.
First, the centralized method:
- Motorcycle sweepers ahead of the riders with electrified cattle prods on outriggers
- Motorcycle ******* tailing the riders with passenger-gunner manning Taser on a swivel mount
Second, the "crowd-sourced" method: 100 euro prize for every spectator who takes down a runner, with the top-scoring spectators competing for a special blue jersey.

Too open to abuse. You'd have runners and trippers splitting the prize money. Gangs of runners-trippers roaming the Alps and Pyrenees.

What concerns me, more seriously, is the potential for closing down the races. It is already incredible that riders can cope with the endless number of idiots in the direct path of the race. I could not take it. At some point riders will be injured and race outcomes affected. I see it getting nothing but worse every year. You cannot barricade the borders of a 2000+ mile race. I don't see what the race managers can realistically do about it.

Yes, yes and frickin' yes! More of this. That guy's a hero.
Trip all those running a-holes...and not a casual trip, but a full on leg sweep like this guy did.

I kept telling my wife while I was watching that if I were there, I would totally be sticking my foot out and tripping every doofus that tried to run past me. If I were a spectator there, I wouldn't put up with it. If I get there days ahead of time, camp out, and wait, the last thing that is going to come between me and seeing my favorite riders racing by is some drunken d-bag in a pink thong running along beside them. I really think the fans need to just take it upon themselves to police these idiots. The police ought to announce a pilot program and encourage the fans to handle their own. Tell them if under the program, the fans don't handle it and the race continues to be affected by it, then the police will start arresting anybody on the road surface that gets within 10 feet of a rider. The fans will take care of it rather than risk getting the police involved.

While fans have always been crazy I get the feeling its been gradually getting worse. Way more looking into the camera and "it's about ME getting on TV" than the race itself. I'd rather see the fans cheering their support running a few paces next to the riders than most of what I see now. Many are cheering into the camera, oblivious to the riders, and worse yet, many stopping their run in the middle of the road before realizing there's and entire group of riders and cars/cycles right behind.
Of course we rant about it every year but the "etiquette" of the fan seems to be breaking down.

Overall historically the fans have been great. Imagine letting fans from any major American sport that close! (Do not even think of letting Soccer fans that close).
But I think you may have hit on a change for the worse. It seems to me that the 'Look at me' part has increased. Before the focus was still on the riders. And perhaps 'focus' is the right word as years ago a good percentage of the actual collisions were with fans taking pictures. As opposed to really too close which was usually fans of the rider they got too close to.

It might actually be a lot more civil now than in the days when roadside fans would stick tree branches into the spokes. Still it does seem to be getting worse than in recent tour history. That stuff with Cavandish was over the top.

I think all the runners get there days ahead, camp out, and wait, too, it's how they have enough time to drink enough to get them fired up for their big moments! Theoretically if you were camping there with them you could try and talk some sanity into them. And they could try the inverse on you.
