Audio from Inside the Caravan at the Amgen Tour

Here's a sound clip you might find interesting.

It's a recording of Radio Tour, which is broadcast throughout the race caravan.

The breakaway on Stage Six had a 50-second lead. When the Yellow Jersey stops to answer nature's call, the pace slowed to 12mph, and the gap grew instantly.

Kind of interesting. We think that the breakaway establishes its lead through hard work and synergy. In reality, it really gets sealed when the Yellow Jersey decides it's time to take a break.

Listen closely at the :40 mark.

I have always thought the breakaway establishes its lead primarily because it's allowed to get away, that's why GC contenders don't try to join it. You'll notice on the audio clip that they give the race numbers of all the riders in the breakaway. Why do you think that is?

On the yellow jersey taking a piss, this is obviously a quiet part of the stage where comfort breaks are normal and everyone is allowed a bit of dignity.

This is all perfectly normal.

Except for one or two stages this year*, the BOTD (Breakaway of the day) came after a flurry of attacks in the first 10k of the race. One after the next. RadioTour is constantly updating us as to who is in the breakaway. We write them down on a white board and then quickly erase them when they get caught. Some get up to a minute lead, but then they get reeled in.
She reads the numbers off so that the team directors know who's in the break. Everyone has a roster taped to their dash.

While the attackers are trying to get a breakaway started, plenty of lesser guys are stopping to pee. usually in small groups. And the racing continues at the front. But when the big names (Yellow Jersey, Wiggins, Cavendish, etc) stop to pee, the racing is shut down, and whatever breakaway is up the road at the time is given a huge bonus. That's what this clip demonstrates.

The Yellow Jersey doesn't necessarily wait for a quiet point in the race. He creates it.

*San Jose for sure. The very first attack came in the first Km and they stayed away for most of the day.

Yeah, well if Wiggins has to put in an effort in to catch the peloton then he'll have at least one Sky rider to pace him back so I guess it's just easier to knock off the pace for a minute.

Anyway, once they start reeling in the breakaway, yellow jersey or no yellow jersey it's piss in your pants time.
