Both of Froome's wrists were wrapped and he was a mess already. He fell before the cobbles. Maybe the control over his bike was compromised. We've been through two sections of the cobbles and no one has fallen on them.

A blow for Talansky as it looks as though acevedo may retire, over ten minutes back.
And a crash on the cobbles finally.
Don't know about anyone else, but i am loving this, its like cycling of old, true gladiator stuff.

I have never ever seen so many crashes in a stage. 2 Astana guys down but rolling, almost took Nibali.

They should have left this stage for later on when things were a little bit more built up. THey knew this place was going to shed riders, it's too early to start shedding contenders. Stage 2 in Britain was enough for the first week of racing. This stage should have been in the last week. Start in the Pyrenees, head southeast towards the alps and finish in Roubaix then Paris. The weather is appalling.
2) I believe its been known to rain in other parts of France as well.
3) you can't run the TDF counterclockwise this year. For 100 years or so, the TDF has followed the same pattern: clockwise one year (Alps then Pyranees) and counterclockwise the next (Pyranees then Alps)

I'm not watching the race, so this is just a general comment. The Cobbles can result in crashes before the Cobbles.
Everyone wants to be at the front before the Cobbles, to avoid crashing and to avoid being split off caught behind crashes.
So everyone is pushing to get up front and nervous about their positioning in the pack. That often leads to crashes before a tough section.

There's probably some shadenfreude, but Wiggins would not have done any better than Froome today as at heart he's a track and time trial guy and does not like rain and rough roads.
Still Wiggins is a decent guy and I bet there's a bit of him who feels for Froome.........not much of a bit though.
