What is the yellow Mavic car for?
Yellow Mavic car with yellow bikes on top. What is that for? I'm pretty sure there is no Mavic factory team and I haven't seen anyone riding yellow bikes. But I see that car and bikes every year, or I have since I started watching the TdF in 2012.

It is a neutral support car. Riders can take wheels from that if they are not near their own team car.

So why does it have yellow bikes all over the top? Just for looks?

They can take a bike too if they are far away from their own cars. Why yellow? It is their corporate colour.

Pedals on the Mavic Support bikes at this year's Paris Nice;
Rather than worrying about having Look, SPDSL, Lollipops etc, just give em all clips and straps and see how they do.

haha yeah I knew they were yellow for that reason, just wondering why they were up there. Clips and straps is pretty funny. Has anyone actually ever used one?

I've never seen a frame be removed from a neutral support car, but of course all you see if the coverage that we get, so it may happen more regularly than we think. Generally, though, it's going take a fair amount to render a bike unusable. While it's not that uncommon to see riders take new bikes, often that's just because doing so will take less time than making the adjustment they want.

It's happened. I'm not sure how far they've got with the clips. I'm sure there are riders in the Tour who've never actually used clips in their lives.

Not exactly one of the Mavic bikes but a good story nonetheless.

Toeclips are fine over short distances while seated as long as the straps are tight. Unfamiliar foot positioning and overall poor fit are much bigger concerns.

My old bike still has clips on it. Which reminds me - I need to go get some tools to remove them as I can't stand them any more

Most likely. But lets say it is part way down the final decent, they may never get the chance. Also remember each team has only 2 cars. Iftehy have a rider off the front and a contender for the GC in teh group of contenders a few minutes back from there then that is where the 2 team cars will be and they won't drop a car back for another rider and put their important riders at risk.

I used to have a bike that I painted to look like one of the old Campagnolo neutral support bikes... sort of a royal blue with white trim, can't find a photo at the moment but there was a great ad with a station wagon that had all the bikes on top and a Campagnolo fairing over the windshield.
That was back in the days when everybody had quill pedals and slotted cleats.
