Anyone using a Blackburn EX-1 disc (for a Co-pilot Limo) with a 29er? Tire size woes
Is anyone running a Blackburn EX-1 disc rack with a Co-pilot limo on a 29er? If so what brand and size of tires are you using?
Have been trying to get a Blackburn EX-1 disc rack installed on my 29er so I can cart my little one around using a Co-pilot limo child seat. However I'm having issues with tire clearance, even though Blackburn claim this is 29er compatible.
29er was originally equipped with some Schwalbe 29x2.15 tires (what Schwalbe refers to as 28 x 2.15) and they were so tall the tire jammed against the cross bars of the rack.
Changed down to some Vitoria Revolution G+ 29x2.0 tires and while they clear the rack (just), with the child seat on and little one installed, due to some rack sag, I get a little rub and an annoying whine, which is damn annoying.
Tried asking Blackburn what was the max tire circumference the rack was compatible but they have been useless. Repeated emails and phone calls have basically confirmed they don't really know their products or care about their customers. Retailer I bought the rack from has also been a bust.

'They' are remote (mostly ship containers loaded, to warehouses, not you or I), bike shops are closer to you, ask yours,
locally rather than internet.
googled to see what you are talking about .. https://www.blackburndesign.com/ex-1-disc-rack.html
Consider they may have made them for tires of say 35mm on a 622 rim. (common touring bikes) not a 50 or 60 wide tire..
So put on the appropriate sized tires. don't be stubborn. smaller width...

That seems strange. Granted I don't have the disk version but mine rides high enough to clear a 29er tire, even though the eyelet is pretty low. The older disk version goes directly on the QR so the height should be dialed. The website Bob linked says
so they probably made it taller.
Performance sells these and they should make you happy if you have one locally.
(29” compatibility on EX-1 Disc models after 2013)

Can you post a picture? There can be multiple ways to install racks, you may have inadvertently chosen a method that reduces your clearance.
Also - Are you short in width or height?

Thanks for the responses on this (and apologies for my tardy response).
@fietsbob - My LBS has tried but has no sense of what tires may work because Blackburn doesn't have that information. Short of borrowing different wheelsets with different tires, theres no easy way to tell.
I understand I could run wide(ish) 700c tires with this rack, but because my frame is built for 29er wheels, the rack states it compatible and I want to lug a child around and feel the larger tire, the safer (and more comfortable) I'd love to run bigger '29er' tires here. This would also means I can just remove the child seat and head for bike camping with confidence; just like the handling with the larger tires.
@Darth Lefty - This is brand new rack, purchased for a large bike retailer. AFAIK Blackburn just made it a little wider but height is exactly the same. Tried a demo model at LBS and still had same issues.
@vich - The rack mounts on the QR so theres only one way to install on my bike. 29x2.15s and 2.0s both hit the same point on the rack, which is the front cross bar (see picture); related to circumference rather than width.
Mostly just wanted to see if anyone has tire suggestions or could report success.
Seems that the Vittoria Revolution G+ tires I tried using (29x2.0) have an ETTRO of 50x622 and their widest 700c version (700x38c) is 40x622 so if nothing else I can try downscaling to these tires.

Don't know if this will be useful to you at all since I'm on 26" wheels, but on my MTB I'm running 26x1.5 slicks with fenders and have enough clearance for the rack.
