First Bike for 4yo

First Bike for 4yo
My oldest son is about to turn 4. I want to get him a bike, but don't know whether to get a balance bike, or a pedal bike with training wheels. What do you recommend?

Training wheels are a tried and true method.
Balance bikes work but once the kid learns how to balance and wants to pedal you have to buy a new bike.
Can always get a 12 inch bike, take the pedals off, drop the seat way down, and make it a balance bike. (Sorta)
Then when he's mastered that, toss the pedals back on and he's ready to go.
Then you get a balance bike (kinda) and a real bike for 1 low price.

On yer bike
I'd try to find a cheap, used, larger sized balance bike (craigslist/ebay/etc). Use it until he's confident on it, then sell it off and buy a 16" pedal bike. Once a kid can use a balance bike confidently, they can basically just hop onto a normal pedal bike and go.
