Do I Have a Problem?
I just took my first real ride on a new Trek 1000. While riding, I noticed something odd that I had not noticed on a short test ride. The left upper grip – the one just above the drop – is angled inward at around 40 degrees. The one on the right is perpendicular to the bar. Can this be right? I see no way of turning the grip, so I really don’t see how it could have gotten turned. I’m puzzled. If it’s wrong, I need to get back to the shop.

Take it back to the shop. It sounds like the shifter/brake assembly is loose and they need to tighten it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "left upper grip," but if it's the brake lever, there's an allen screw that secures the clamp. If you loosen that, you can turn the lever until it's straight. Squeeze the lever and look inside from the front, into the gap that opens when the lever moves. You should see a six-sided hole in there. I think it takes a 5- or 6mm hex wrench. Loosen that, straighten the lever and tighten it again.
The lever could have been knocked over in the shop when somebody dropped the bike or something, and it's not a big deal--in fact you should leave them loose enough that if you crash, they'll pivot out of the way. But it also could be evidence of sloppy assembly, so check the bike over at some point.
