best way to store 7 bikes - 4 of which move everyday
in our garage we have 7 bikes... well, honestly there are 9 -but we're selling 2 of them this week
2 roadbikes < 20lbs
1 29er MTB < 25lbs
and 4 26" heavy steel bikes > 30lbs
the kids bikes are the heavier ones (how does that happen anyways!?!)
The kids aren't "little" per se; our youngest is 11...
I love the though of the hoist setups but I'd be afraid of the kids yanking the bikes up/down all the time. A floor based rack is easy - but takes up a lot of space.
4 of the bikes are continually on the move for work/school, etc and the others don't get much ride time - but are around nonetheless...
thoughts? ideas?

I hang them from large rubber coated hooks screwed into a 2x4 from the rafters from either the front or rear wheel in a staggered pattern, one up, one down and so on.
This picture was after I first set this up and hadn't worked out the staggered thing yet, it's easier to hang them all from the rear wheel but they fit better staggered.
Of course I don't park a car in my garage either though.

If I had 7 bikes, 4 of which get used everyday, I'd hang 3 of the bikes, and get a standing bike rack for the other 4. I'd situate the bike rack in a way that facilitates its use, ie put it in a prime convenient location in the garage so it is easy to pull in and out. Keep a shelf nearby to store gloves, helmets, shoes, etc.
I see in your OP that you think standing racks take up a lot of space, but your family seems to have committed to being bicycle centric, so you should commit an equal amount of space to support that.

Whoa... and I thought that my garage was crowded with bikes! I can't wait to show this pic to my wife to justify why I need another bike!
But seriously, I organize my garage in much the same way, with the rarely used bikes hung along the back wall, and the well-used bikes parked on the floor.

I do need to clear out my 3rd garage bay - it's gone horizontal on everything in a few years - if I clean that up I can likely hang 3-4 bikes pretty easily
